Pres. Carter's Letter to Zell Miller:
Edited on Tue Sep-07-04 03:32 PM by hlthe2b
Full Text from Josh Marshall: (as a letter, not an article, copyright protections don't apply. Thus I include the complete text):
http://www.talkingpointsmemo.com/

You seem to have forgotten that loyal Democrats elected you as mayor and as state senator. Loyal Democrats, including members of my family and me, elected you as lieutenant governor and as governor. It was a loyal Democrat, Lester Maddox, who assigned you to high positions in the state government when you were out of office. It was a loyal Democrat, Roy Barnes, who appointed you as U.S. Senator when you were out of office. By your historically unprecedented disloyalty, you have betrayed our trust.

Great Georgia Democrats who served in the past, including Walter George, Richard Russell, Herman Talmadge, and Sam Nunn disagreed strongly with the policies of Franklin Roosevelt, Harry Truman, John Kennedy, Lyndon Johnson, and me, but they remained loyal to the party in which they gained their public office. Other Democrats, because of philosophical differences or the race issue, like Bo Callaway and Strom Thurmond, at least had the decency to become Republicans.

Everyone knows that you were chosen to speak at the Republican Convention because of your being a “Democrat,” and it’s quite possible that your rabid and mean-spirited speech damaged our party and paid the Republicans some transient dividends.

Perhaps more troublesome of all is seeing you adopt an established and very effective Republican campaign technique of destroying the character of opponents by wild and false allegations. The Bush campaign’s personal attacks on the character of John McCain in South Carolina in 2000 was a vivid example. The claim that war hero Max Cleland was a disloyal American and an ally of Osama bin Laden should have given you pause, but you have joined in this ploy by your bizarre claims that another war hero, John Kerry, would not defend the security of our nation except with spitballs. (This is the same man whom you described previously as “one of this nation's authentic heroes, one of this party's best-known and greatest leaders -- and a good friend.")

I, myself, never claimed to have been a war hero, but I served in the navy from 1942 to 1953, and, as president, greatly strengthened our military forces and protected our nation and its interests in every way. I don’t believe this warrants your referring to me as a pacificist.

Zell, I have known you for forty-two years and have, in the past, respected you as a trustworthy political leader and a personal friend. But now, there are many of us loyal Democrats who feel uncomfortable in seeing that you have chosen the rich over the poor, unilateral preemptive war over a strong nation united with others for peace, lies and obfuscation over the truth, and the political technique of personal character assassination as a way to win elections or to garner a few moments of applause. These are not the characteristics of great Democrats whose legacy you and I have inherited.
****************
Marshall: "I contacted President Carter's office for comment and his press spokesperson Deanna Congileo told me that the letter was a private communication and that President Carter would not be issuing further comment."

2. Excellent letter and I agree with every bit of it except
the one little part where he refers to Lester Maddox as a "loyal Democrat"--Maddox ran for president once as an independent--in fact I think it might have been 1976.

But other than that it puts Zell in his place.

5. Great letter, Thanks. (but you left off his PS)
p.s. Zell, if I ever see your lying ass in my neck of the woods I'm going put my boot into your small intestine. You're a disgrace to Georgia, to America and, yes, to the human race. I'll watch you burn in hell, MF'er.

8. If you've raised the hackles on Jimmy Carter
then you've screwed up big time.

I've never known Jimmy Carter to lecture someone on anything like this and this is about as complete a condemnation as one could imagine from the Democratic Party - Jimmy Carter called Zell disloyal.

11. Thanks for posting. I just love President Carter
Can't they throw that bat-shit crazy Zell out of the Democratic Party?

He is not only a disgrace to Democrats, he should be seen as a disgrace to ALL Americans.

14. Zell's been a DINO for years
In fact, I heard he has not caucused EVEN ONCE with the Senate Democrats-- not once in the six years he's been in the US Senate. And I'm pretty certain his voting record would fit quite nicely along side that of Trent Lott.

However, I give ol' Zell credit-- his little speech and followups are the most entertainment I've had from a political convention since Pat Buchanan's hate-filed spewfest in 1992.

22. How Did Zell Turn Into a Boll Weevil?

How do they do this?

One envisions a scene like the one at the beginning of "Star Trek: The Wrath of Khan".
Perhaps the BFEE has crossbred the boll weevil with Khan's mind-controlling sluglike creatures.

31. Works for me...
I'm not sure if Zell is some sort of early 60s throwback, or maybe he was frozen for 20 years and defrosted in the late 80s to be Georgia's governor, or maybe it's the syphillis he caught when he was a rentboy causing brain bubbles, but he's definately gone very far off the deep end.

I gotta wonder if Trent Lott gave him help with his speech this year, that thing was straight outta 1959.

16. Well, he had to direct the discourse to Zell's level.....
and, racist asshole or no, I suppose one could argue that Maddox largely remained a "Democrat" through the bulk of his career.

21. Excellent letter. I think that the whole Zell Miller thing will backfire
on the Repukes. I think that Zell has dementia or some other brain disease. When it eventually comes out, the Republicans are going to be embarrassed that they manipulated an old confused man at the end of his career.

Meanwhile, this is a thorough ass-kicking and tells everybody exactly what the Democratic Party thinks about Zell Miller's behavior.

Brilliant strategy. And people called Jimmy Carter a pacifist....

23. "... or to garner a few moments of applause"
That's nailing it.

The Repub Convention was just another stop on Zell's book tour. When he couldn't sell his book to Dems, face time with Repubs surely increased sales.

24. Check out the Yahoo! story on this--Zell's justification is incredible.
He says he's putting his "family's security" first.

Not principles, beliefs, etc. Not concerns about the direction of the country or his former party. Nothing that might MAKE SENSE.

Sounds as if he was bribed, pure and simple.

27. this one you mean?
http://news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&cid=694&u=/ap/20040907/ap_on_el_pr/carter_miller_2&printer=1
--snip--

Miller responded Tuesday by repeating his contention, made in the convention speech last week, that the security of his family outweighed any loyalty to the party where he has spent a lifetime.

"John F. Kennedy warned about the dangers of extreme party loyalty and once said, 'What sins have been committed in its name,'" said Miller, who plans to retire in January as a Democrat. "My first loyalty is and always will be my family."

Carter also defended himself against Miller's accusation in the speech that Carter was a pacifist. Carter said he served in the Navy from 1942 to 1953 and, as president, strengthened the nation's military.

This isn't the first time the two former governors have clashed since Miller began disagreeing with Democrats on key policy matters.

Last December, Carter said Miller had betrayed the principles he thought the two shared. Carter said former Gov. Roy Barnes' decision to appoint Miller to the Senate was a mistake.
