Poll: Obama has 16-point lead over McCain

THE POLL: Pew Research Center, national presidential race among registered voters.

THE NUMBERS: Barack Obama 52 percent, John McCain 36 percent.

OF INTEREST: This is the fourth consecutive survey by Pew that shows McCain trailing Obama among registered voters since the end of September. Asked whether McCain would be like President Bush or go his own way, 47 percent say the Republican would continue Bush's policies compared with 40 percent who say McCain would take the country in a new direction. Both men and women lean toward Obama. Blacks overwhelming back the Democrat, while whites are split between the two candidates. More independent voters support Obama over McCain, 48 percent to 31 percent.

DETAILS: Conducted Oct. 23-26 by landline and cellular telephone with 1,325 registered voters. Sampling error margin plus or minus 3 percentage points.
