How long did it take to reach 1000 American deaths in Vietnam?

5. difficult to compare
us troop levels in vietnam were pretty low for the first few years, then jumped up dramatically. For the first few years (61-64) I think there were only around 20,000 us troops deployed in vietnam, but in 65 it jumped to around 180,000 and more than doubled to 380,000 the next year. I Drang, numerous incidents throughout the country, - Well before the Tet Offrensive.
I don' t know for sure but I think it did not take all that long.

4. It depends on when you start counting.
Most people agree that major ground operations started in mid-1965. There were 6,000 killed in calendar year 1966.

6. Usually when you count, you start at the beginning, with the first one.

So you would start counting when the first US GI set foot on Vietnamese soil as a military advisor, or I guess you could start counting from the first US death.

But it certainly wouldn't make much sense to say that deaths before 1965 "don't count".
