Barack speaks Spanish!
For those of you out there who speak Spanish, how cool is this? His accent is pretty darn good, too. Apparently, this is a leaked half minute version of a 2 minute direct-to-camera ad that will appear on Univision tonight, after the Spanish-language edition of the 30 minute infomercial.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-DZIwklOWEE&eurl=http://voices.washingtonpost.com/the-trail/2008/10/24/early_look_at_obama_speaking_s.html

So far as I know, no major party candidate has ever addressed the American people in Spanish for more than a few words or a sentence. Way to go Barack!!!

8. I remember Dukakis saying a few words at a rally somewhere, but
Obama does a great job on this.

Way to reach the Univision demographic!

33. Kerry's 2nd language is French -- which was seen
as a handicap in the willing ignorance of the US in 2004.

3. Wow, That was impressive.
Was his accent good? I hear a lot of Spanish and it sounded pretty cool. I loved how he could even emphasize correctly the words he wanted to emphasize and sounded emphatic even in Spanish.

Spanish speakers, how was he?

11. Pretty good
I mean, he's not a native speaker like Richardson, but he's more than good enough to get by. He's not funny sounding, like when candidates can say one or two words, or a simple sentence.

26. His accent was good. He actually pronounced all the vowels in difficult words
He didn't try to slur them together like you do in English. The word 'apruebo' is very difficult to say and he said it.

It was also understandable, and made sense and anyone who speaks Spanish would assume he knows enought to have a conversation.

13. Bush called the Spanish Prime Minster "Mr. Goose" in Spanish
Edited on Wed Oct-29-08 04:37 PM by aint_no_life_nowhere
He called him Mr. Ansar (a word for goose) instead of Aznar.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_U.S._presidential_faux-pas,_gaffes,_and_unfortunate_incidents

June 11, 2001 — Bush appeared on Spanish television and said "It is a great honor to travel to Spain and visit the King and also Prime Minister Anzar. But I have to practice the very pretty language, and unless I practice I am going to destroy this language". He had in fact mispronounced the name of the Prime Minister, José María Aznar. He called him ansar, a Spanish word for "goose". (Daily Telegraph)

to mis orejas gringas, he sounds pretty good. His pronunciation -- especially what I used to call "tight" vowels -- is better than most. He still has an American accent, but he gets the point across.

"Not just for me and the Democrats, but to maintain the American dream for you and your children."

20. I'm surprised I'm surprised by this.
But I really didn't expect it. He is uber ubercool. One of the only "McCain Kids" in my son's 3rd grade class is Hispanic and I just don't get it. Maybe these kinds of ads will help swing that tide.

Of course the xenophobic shitsmearers on the right will say it means he wants us to speak Spanish only in the classrooms and adopt the Mexican flag as our own.

Still he is one class act. GOBAMA!

31. It's very good.
I don't think there is any Spanish speaking person that would have trouble understanding him. A little bit of an accent, but much better than a lot of other people I have heard attempting Spanish.

His is way better than Bush's, by the way.

35. My Northamerican mother speaks spanish with a thick accent
But she's also fluent. She understands it perfectly and can communicate well, although not grammatically correctly. Spanish speaking people recognize that she can speak the language and immediately start talking to her in Spanish.
