Drinking gin, in a hot tub, in the rain. 4AM
Couldn't sleep.

At my cottage in the redwoods, right outside of Larkspur, California.

Up on the hill, no sound but the rain and a snoring dog.

Went outside with a bottle of Bombay Sapphire Gin, right out of the freezer.

Walked around on the deck, smoking and drinking and thinking.

Rain dripping out of huge trees, just like it has always done.

Just like it has always done.

But something's different, this time.

Really different.

Sitting in 100 degree swirling water, cold raindrops in my hair.

Thinking...

All of those old trees...

My old house...

Will all be new, next week.

Gonna be a New World, America.

Gonna be a New World.

Anyway, that's what I was thinking...

Drinking, in a hot tub at 4AM, in the rain.

Tom

10. You saw my house, but this is my getaway.
Next time, villager.

I have this old Eichler cottage nestled in the woods outside of Larkspur.

You saw my Gallery.

It has nothing on my cottage.

I like that

Spent this week talking about the Great Depression at school (community college Humanities course).

Showed the first half of 'Grapes of Wrath' in class today.

Usually the students are restless and ready for the door 5 minutes early.

Not today.

They know what we're facing. And I think they know how to battle it.

36. Warren was transcendent.
Once many years ago in another October in a little cabin tucked in the redwoods between 101 and the Trinity Wilderness me and a couple of other guys listened to Warren almost non-stop as we did our monotonous manicure task.

It was where i first got to know and love the songs on "Excitable Boy" and I was hooked for life.

Tom, that's a picture I love. Your post could easily become a song.

Funny how hope is so similar to hype. Yet the rage of nearly a decade is so close to dissolving into green hope.

Speaking of redwoods, I can't wait for the burn days to begin again. I've got an entire logging landing of trees that are going to make a month long bonfire.

23. We rented a house in Jenner, CA once. It was nestled amongst the huge trees and
you could just barely catch a glimpse of the ocean through a small break. In the morning we'd make hot strong coffee and drink it on the deck, watching the birds fly in and out of the dense fog. At night we'd sit in the hot top and look at the stars while creatures rustled in the dark around us. It was so beautiful there. Thank you for reminding me of that week. How wonderful that you can experience that whenever you like! I'm jealous!

That was a beautiful, calming picture you painted. Hopefully when I'm standing in the throngs of people in Grant Park on Tuesday night, I can remember that sense of calm. :hi:

In our yard that backs up to a forest, just steps from the Puget Sound. (our town is a low-priced version of Marin County, on the water near Seattle.)

But I can dig what you're sayin'.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gary_Snyder

A California poet from the beat generation. He lives more near the Sierra Nevadas, though. Among Gary Snyder's many bio tidbits, in Jack Kerouac's book "The Dharma Bums" the character "Japhy Ryder" was based on Gary Snyder.

Loved your writing by the way. :yourock:

Funny, you know...

For a guy my age (58), I know almost nothing of Kerouac, Ginsberg, any of thoa guys.

I never really read, much.

And I never went to school.

Just sort of muddled by....

Started writing, solely for my own amusement.

Thank you,

You must know that

Poety can be a real delight.

Although today, today I seem to feel this world-felt fright

- and need relief -

from trying to imagine
tomorrow as - exactly tomorrow as a matter of fact- rarely can we
measure this way - as -

". . . for all the history of grief
an empty doorway and a maple leaf"

instead of that good good light.

I can not wait till the end of this election .. . . . by the way, I'm a northern Californian. I guess that makes me a real new world explorer. Thanks for your notes from the hot tub
