My SIL just named a rescued chicken (see below) Ba-ROK!
Chicken fell off a poultry truck going down route 75 in Sarasota. SIL gets out of her car and rescues it, brings it home and calls me. SIL is the one who recently got excited over Obama. We discuss the chicken's name and come up with Ba-ROK. Hahahahahahahahaha!

4. Chickens are wonderful creatures to have around.
I'm guessing it's a hen, which means she'll get a few eggs every week, too. I used to have a couple of hens, and they were more pets than anything else (loved to be picked up and petted--especially for head scratches). Smart, funny, and terrorized my cats.

Yay for your SIL for the rescue!

7. She lives in an expensive condo in Florida
Her neighbors are horrified. She's laughing her ass off as the chicken sits on her sofa watching TV with her. Her dog is confused as hell.

9. That's AWESOME.
And her neighbors need to get over it. As long as roosters aren't part of the equation, I think anybody (even city dwellers--hell, especially city dwellers) should be able to keep a hen or two.

11. There was a big story in Lynn Ma about a guy being fined for having
chickens in his yard. I went on for weeks. I think he eventually had to get rid of the.

13. We had obnoxious neighbors who complained to the HOA about ours.
They went bok-bok-bok around 10 am (egg-laying time), and otherwise made very little noise. Their fucking dog barked ceaselessly around the clock, but that was fine. :eyes:

We found somebody to adopt them, and this is the email update he sent us a couple of weeks after he took them, to let us know they'd settled in fine with his flock (it was so sweet and funny, that I saved the email after 3+ years now):

"Just a note to say that Aretha and Fontella are settling in as well as
could be expected. I can't say that the rest of the flock welcomed
them with open wings, but being slightly larger than the resident hens
(all Aracana mixes), they are given respectful distance.

It seems apparent that they are rather pampered hens. The first
morning we feed them, they seemed to look at us like "where is the
morning paper and tea"? Then last night, one came to the back door and
started squawking, as though it expected to be let in. Also, one of
them has the curious habit of dining while seated - quite sophisticated
for a chicken - ours just run around eating like poorly mannered
heathens.

Maybe I shouldn't say so, but I definitely think that they miss you and
their old way of life. That said though, I think they will be as happy
as can be, considering - kind of like they have been sent off to
boarding school.

While I sympathize with your misfortune (nasty neighbors), I thank you
for boarding your hens with us. If you should find your selves in a
chicken supportive lifestyle any time in the not-too-distant future,
please feel free to reclaim your hens - yes, we would miss them also,
but far be it from me to lay claim to someone else's pet if
circumstances change."

15. sits on her sofa--thank you so much for that delightful mental picture
They look so cozy together, in my mind's eye. (She's very nice to let someone who pooped all over her car sit on her sofa.)

This is one of the best things I've read all day--I would love to hang out with your SIL!

8. what a nice person!
It's not easy to catch a chicken--how sweet of her to go to all that effort!

I wonder what the drive home was like, with a frightened chicken flapping around the car. :)

10. Chicken pooped all over her car so she wrapped it in her dogs blanket
Dog nearly lost his mind. He's a Scotty--highstrung with a strange horse obsession.

12. Chickens have the mental capacity of a two-year old.
They can make great companions. Great name too! Please, just keep the duct tape away from the chicken. ;)
