30. That's the memo that caught my interest the most
failure to live up to USAF/TANG standards.

That and the CYA saying he was being pressured to sugar coat reviews by General Straudt (was that his name?) and said he was having a hard time running interference and doing his job.

The guys dead, so he can't fight back. Maybe it won't matter. All you really need to do is plant the seeds of doubt. That's Rove's MO isn't it? Might work against him this time.

2. Ben Barnes had very little face time...
just enough to say he did give preferential treatment to Bush and other sons of the well connected.

They are giving more time to the "Killian memo." Of course Dan Bartlett is decrying it as Texas politics.

the CBS Nightly News.

In the snippet I saw the guy said "He (Killian, I'm assuming) was from Texas, and they play dirty down there"

Did he forget where Our Great President was the Great Governor of?

I loved it - "This is the same stuff we see every time he runs for office."
Well, now it's more of an issue since much has been made about Kerry's service. I love how they showed Bush fibbing right to the cameras - "My dad did not influence anyone to get into the ANG".

Fwah.

19. Wow - this better have some legs - and story is up on CBS Website
http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2004/09/06/politics/main641481.shtml

<snip>

What has never surfaced before, reports CBS News Anchor Dan Rather, are four documents from the personal files of Col. Jerry Killian, Mr. Bush's squadron commander. They could help answer lingering questions on whether Lt. Bush received special consideration during his military service.

The first memo is a direct order to take "an annual physical examination" – a requirement for all pilots.

Another memo refers to a phone call from the lieutenant in which he and his commander "discussed options of how Bush can get out of coming to drill from now through November." And that due to other commitments "he may not have time."

On August 1, 1972, Col. Killian grounded Lt. Bush for failure to perform to U.S. Air Force/Texas Air National Guard standards and for failure to take his annual physical as ordered.

45. You're right, but this is just the beginning . . . now that the Boston
Globe and CBS are on it, the copy-cat media is going to have to cover it.

Once they do, the story-line will slowly change from "Bush--our iron jawed defender post 9-11" to "Bush--our lying sack of shit president imposter."

Think of what a sea-change this represents--the media have the perfect cover for digging into this now after all the Swift Boat Liars they breathlessly covered.

This is the most hopeful development I've seen since the campaign started--the Bush bastards thought they had all the damning evidence covered up, but NO, it's starting to leak out.

Thank God, there's some hope that our four years of hell may be coming to an end.

90. we should boycott the media
get a list of who we should watch....Oberman, 60 minutes, whatever and then email the rest en mass and say "we just shut our tv's off"

and then do it!

I emailed them this today after taking out a reference to bush refusing to answer questions about Cheney's remarks

did you remove a reference to the President refusing to answer a question about Dick Cheney's remarks yesterday.......?
I hope not...that would make me think that MSNBC IS BIASED TOWARDS THE PRESIDENT.

well the removal of this statement :

Bush refused to answer questions from reporters. He simply stared at a reporter who asked if he agreed with Vice President Dick Cheney’s assertion that if Democrat John Kerry is elected, “the danger is that we’ll get hit again” by terrorists.
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/5911852
is being talked about all over the blogs.........

It's a real problem in America, when the simple truth can't be reported........ISN'T IT?

CAN'T YOU ACT LIKE A REAL NEWS AGENCY?

well at least these guys had the courage to tell the truth.
http://www.boston.com/dailynews/252/wash/Bush_laments_loss_of_life_in_I:.shtml
''We mourn every loss of life,'' he said. ''We will honor their memories by completing the mission.''

31. I hate to drop a sh*t bomb, here.
You know what the wingnuts are going to say, though. Barnes is a Dem and is doing fundraising for Dems, especially John Kerry; Dan Rather is a liberal media whore; the most important information came from a dead guy.

Yeah, I know -- I'm sure the stuff is all true. I'm just making a prediction on the lies that will butter the mouths of right-wing pundits, watercooler jockeys and those for whom the Nile is not just a river in Egypt.

I just hope at least some undecided voters watched this show without a Republican in the room to tell them what's wrong with it.

48. Hey, I didn't say the wingnuts' babble discredited any of it.
But Killian died twenty years ago, and as much as they want to believe Bush* is some kind of hero, they're going to go ballistic trying to shout this down. I'm not trying to discredit the information myself -- as I said, I believe it's true, and even if not, I have enough other problems with Bush* I didn't need it -- but I am trying to prepare people for what the Republicans they run into will say about it.

Going to bitch at the sponsors and "open their wallets" to the Swifties for Satan.

Lots of posts linking to Nat'l Review idiots counting "points" that Bush accrued showing that "he did too" serve enough.

Strange, if he had the "points," what's with all the memos from his superiors ragging his ass about finishing his committment. And why can't he or the pentagon simply issue the documents showing that he did his service through pay stubs and retirement records?

Also, lots of posts on why Barnes is a despicable bastard--well, hell, he's a Texas politician working for Republicans, so that's a given.

Here's a typical sample post we can all savor by feeling superior to--

Hell, 99% of the young men my age tried to leverage for best advantage with regard to Vietnam.
I must be close to your age, and I know exactly what you're talking about!

And we both now that John Kerry got FOUR DEFERMENTS while he was in college, and asked for the FIFTH one, was turned down, and enlisted in the Naval RESERVE so he wouldn't be drafted into the Army!

80. Maybe you'll understand my attitude better if you know...
that I live in southwestern Ohio, and hear that BS day in and day out. It's a Republican echo chamber, down in my part of Ohio -- if it wasn't for having Dems to hang around with here at DU, I'd blow my freakin' brains out. But I am quite adept at predicting what the spin from the admin will be, because I hear it out of my neighbors every day, around here.

I don't like it, and as I said -- I'm sure Bush* did as little as he could possibly get by with, and everything I've heard and read so far on the subject rings true to me. I've just had to hear the BS all my life, I'm great at doing simulations of it.

This story is important because it is the Truth. It's important that an American news show reported the truth about something. Despite all the money and power and influence replacing the truth with lies in this election, tonight a little bit of the truth got out.

87. I sincerely hope you're right, yardwork.
I hope that it reaches enough people to convince them the guy's a genuine hypocrite; a chickenhawk of the first water. But tomorrow I have to go to work and every time I walk past one of my co-workers' offices, hear Hannity/Rush/O'Reilly spinning ... spinning ... spinning. And I know that the spin makes an impact, because I've watched the polling in Ohio go from a fairly even mark to Bush* way ahead, and I know that a large portion of the reason the polling is going that way is spin ... spin ... spin. For a while, I thought there might be a chance for us, here -- but I just don't know. I'm amazed at how many people who live around me must just jam their heads in the sand 24/7 -- it's depressing. Even this, which should cause a major revolution, will be spun until it turns into cotton candy.

Hope it works outside Ohio -- I've lost hope in my home state, for the time being.

But I still think Kerry has a better than even chance of taking it in November. He's just gonna have to do it without my ignorant ostrich fellow Ohioans, apparently.

Believe me, I've heard it all here where I live -- I cannot understand how people whose kids are in the NG who've been deployed, and may soon be deployed again, can kick and scream about being frightened of Kerry, but I've heard it come out of somebody's mouth in recent weeks. Scared of what Kerry will do -- I mean, I guess sending this woman's son to die for the enrichment of Halliburton isn't scary for her at all. Husband's job has been outsourced, but Kerry frightens her.

This is the mentality I deal with day in and day out. I know not all parts of Ohio are like this, but the SW corner has historically been full of fReeper-minded people, and I seem to draw them like a magnet.

108. Yep..Florida is a lot like that.
There are a lot of great Democrats in lower and middle Florida and then there's the top part (The panhandle and Jacksonville) that votes Repug all the way. I mean, Jacksonville (Hicksville) voted for Bush somethimg close to 70% in the last election....Barf!!

Not to slam Ohio but a friend of mine who used to live there said it reminds him of Southern Georgia...just further north. ....Geez...

96. Ben Barnes was financial dir. for Scott McClellan's mom's repub. campaign

McClellan on Ben Barnes revaling how he helped Bush get into the National Guard:

"It is not surprising coming from a longtime partisan Democrat."

Barnes was the head financial officer for Republican Carole Keeton Strayhorn for Texas state comptroller in 2002, Scott McClellan's mother.

97. Like it's any surprise Scotty would misrepresent Barnes.
And Barnes did admit, at one point in the interview, that he was opportunistic. I mean, that's hardly an indictment of Ben Barnes -- most politicians are opportunistic, or they never get beyond county auditor or dogcatcher. But it'll be interesting to see if it gets any press beyond what you just posted here.

We're being shown a four-year-old St. Jude special at the moment. Their phone is off the hook and they're not answering emails.

This afternoon they'd assured a member of our local peace group that 60 Minutes would be shown.

Here's their programming director's email:

Here's their off the hook phone number:

49. Bartlett gave evasive answer as to why Bush did not take medical exam
"He contacted his superiors about his personal situation".

HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO TAKE A PHYSICAL? ONE HOUR? ARE THERE NO DOCTORS IN ALABAMA?

Then by insisting Bush received an honorable discharge, he only hurt his case - CLEARLY in order to get that HD strings had to be pulled because Bartlett just indirectly admitted Bush did NOT in fact take a physical after receiving a DIRECT ORDER to take the physical.

Too busy to follow a DIRECT ORDER? What in the hell else takes precedence over that? During a time of war, no less.

73. The point is, in the military, you don't get to "discuss" your "personal
situation" with your commanding officer, or if you do, expect that that will in any way influence their decisions.

Good commanders will care about your situation, and do what they can within reason to accomodate you so long as it is consistent with the goals of the unit and the mission.

Not taking your flight physical and letting your flight status lapse, for an aviator, because you'd rather work on a campaign than do the cushy National Guard job that was your assignment, does not fall under the category of personal situations meriting consideration. This would be like a doctor letting their medical license lapse. Then you cannot practice and are useless for what your are trained/hired to do.

Bartlett was trying to present this like the then future emperor and his C.O. were on some kind of equal footing. CO told him to get ready and report for his physical. Shrubya had "other priorities" campaigning in Alabama. So he told his CO to go pound sand! He "discussed it" with him! What's everyone so upset about?

Standard parlance in the military when you want documentation to back up what happened in case it's ever questioned later.

A bunch of folks have written in to ask what I thought of Dan Rather's piece on the Bush Guard story. All I can think to say is, that's what's called getting rolled by the White House.

Supposedly CBS is going to put these memos themselves up on their website later this evening. Will they ask the White House for permission?

I thought it somewhat hard hitting to AWOL? What do you all think about the above reaction? Does Marshall know more that CBS didn't cover?

104. The file video of soldiers in Vietnam
Edited on Wed Sep-08-04 09:44 PM by crickets
juxtaposed with a photo of Bush grinning in his little Yale "Y" cap made a powerful statement. The file clip of W denying preferential treatment is also telling. His eyes are flicking constantly until he finally looks away from the camera entirely to deliver his last sentence.

Bartlett's statement, "I chalk it up to politics. They play dirty down in Texas. I've been there. I see how it works." Yes, dear. So do we. Bush is the Texas man, not Kerry, and the hypocrisy reflects poorly on BUSH, not Kerry. At one point, Bartlett lies in direct contradiction to the evidence shown before he is asked about Bush's refusal to follow a direct order. Bartlett looked every tiny inch the greasy PR shill that he is.

Bless you, Colonel Killian, for covering your ass with personal files. You were covering our asses too. I don't envy Robert Strong being in the hot seat, but he did a nice job walking the tightrope. He was honest without badmouthing anyone. Interesting that General Buck "wants to sugar-coat it" Staudt wouldn't consent to an interview about Killian's correspondence with him.

At no time did the word 'desertion' come up. It should have. The door is open, and I hope some journalist somewhere finally bothers to walk on through it.

BARNES: "You walk through the Vietnam Memorial, I tell you, you'll think about it a long time. I don't think that I had any right to have the power that I had, to be able to choose who was going to go to Vietnam and who was not going to go to Vietnam. That's a power, in some instances, and I looked at those names, maybe of determining life or death, and that's not a power that I want to have. I'm very, very sorry."

I have great respect for Barnes' comments and apology. Honestly and graciously admitting a mistake is the mark of the better man, far above the one who continues to duck the truth.

edits: spelling. heh, that'll teach me to use a WP before posting something this long.
