Does the WH still deny that Bush got "strings pulled" for TANG?
The fact that Bush's connections got him into the TANG is not particularly damning - but if they are still denying it (as I gather from the WH response during 60 Mins) then it leaves them open for some uncomfortable questions in the days ahead. They'd be much better off just admitting he got special treatment and moving on. In fact, why didn't Rather ask the WH guy (whose name escapes me) if he thought Barnes was lying?

I was not expecting this story to create some kind of tectonic shift in the race and it didn't. However, Barnes was totally credible and there is no doubt that he got Bush into the TANG. The real important part of this saga is Bush's failure to live up to his part of the bargain. Why didn't he? Where was he? What was he doing?

I think this is an important story because it goes to the heart of Bush's appeal as the straight-talker. It underminds his image as Commander in Chief and it keeps them on the defensive. I think we all understand by now you are either attacking or being attacked and after the last month we've had quite enough of the latter.

What is the bet way to keep this thing alive?

Just like he's too busy working on a political campaign these days to deal with his obligations to the country.
