"Praise Jesus! The Democrats are back!"....beautiful story from SC.
Edited on Thu Sep-09-04 11:27 AM by madfloridian
I love this story about her 10 Commandments and Ken's sign next to it.

Tales from the Road
Ken Campbell is a Dean-inspired candidate for South Carolina State House and a member of the Dean Dozen.

I was doing good work on Saturday, knocking on doors. Two hundred more voters reached, 20 more yard signs placed, $250 accepted in small contributions received, two copies of Outfoxed distributed and a tired man happy to be out of the summer heat. I love it—and I'll be out there again!

Funny story from the trail:
I met a sweet older woman and got to talking about healthcare. Like many of us, she was getting creamed by the rising costs. As we chatted, I noticed the "Ten Commandments" on a sign in her yard (a very common thing in many parts of my county —churches give 'em out).

As we ended out talk, she said, "Well, you seem like an honest man, and you know your stuff... so I guess we'll have to vote for you..... I assume you're a Republican?"

"No, ma'am. I'm a Democrat."

This little lady literally jumped for joy: "Praise Jesus! The Democrats are back! Everyone get out here and meet this man."
She brought out the whole family. She insisted that I put a yard sign up immediately, she even directed me to place it next to her Ten Commandments sign.

I'm sure some Republicans will ride by and scream "Blasphemy!" at our little front lawn metaphor for the way things ought to be: Separation of church and state, right there for the world to see.

Ken was one of the first Dean Dozens.

4. Here is his response to a contribution. Powerful message!
I love this guy! We have donated a couple of times, as that is what we do now. We support candidates like this, and DFA with what we are able to do. I love this note, and it tells it like it is about the South.
xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

I wanted to respond quickly to thank you for your generous donation to my campaign. I am passionate about our common ideology and believe our county (and our nation) is at a turning point.

In the South, we are in danger of becoming a ONE PARTY system. It has been disturbing to read about the complete lack of debate in Columbia. It seems every time a Democrat stands up to speak and try to moderate their extremist agenda, they are struck down. Republicans have virtually locked us out of all committees of any substance. The legislative agenda is theirs from top to bottom.

I am ready to go down there and stand up for Oconee County. Change begins with one person and I've decided it might as well be me. That might sound like rhetoric, but it is the simplest way I can say it.

My opponent raised over $30,000 for his last campaign, according to www.followthemoney.org. I believe with his new-found connections to the power grid in Columbia, he'll likely raise TWICE that amount to try and stomp our message. This fact makes it so very important for Democrats to become aggressive fund-raisers. Thank you for believing in our common ideas enough to open your wallet.

If I can convince a couple of hundred people to contribute as generously, we'll have the resources to counter the "Good Ole Boys" message! Thanks again! KC

9. It was a bright spot in my day to read it.
We are so discouraged here about our house candidate who is anti-everything and pro-Republican values. It is good to see someone making progress.

7. Love that subject line. And Edwards is coming to SC too.
He'll be in Columbia on the 22nd. (I have to work that day, dammit). I'm sure Ken Campbell, Inez Tennenbaum and other SC Dems will benifit.

And while typing this, I just saw a new, hard-hitting ad from Inez T., calling jim demint on his lies about taxes. (This was followed by an ad by demint saying "its time to get rid of the IRS." Sure.)

There's another pretty powerful ad for Inez, slamming demint for saying something about people "whining" about job losses in the sate. That ad ends with a catchphrase similar to "jim demint, he's gone Washington."

Anyway, great post madfloridian.

The Demorats are back. Love that.

11. I think this affected me so because I live in that kind of area.
I truly understand this atmosphere. Our churches here gave out signs supporting Bush and the war, or at least they did last year.

Giving people like Ken the courage to run and make a difference.

15. Bushee's Psalm

Bush is my shepherd,

I shall be in want.

He maketh me lie down on park benches.

He leadeth me beside the still factories,

He restores my doubts about the Republican Party.

He leadeth me into the paths of unemployment for his cronies' sake.

Yea, though no weapons of mass destruction have been found, he maketh me continue to fear evil..

His tax cuts for the rich and his deficit spending discomforts me.

He anointeth me with never-ending debt.

Verily my days of savings and assets are kaput.

Surely poverty and hard living shall follow me all the days of his administration,

And my jobless child shall dwell in my basement forever.
