The dildo party
This is total repudiation of the Republican Party. They have attacked everyone in America, practically: they have attacked women with their assault on choice (with an assault on contraception to follow if that ever happened), they have attacked immigrants (and, by extension, the children of immigrants) with their nativism and xenophobia, they have attacked college graduates with their phony anti-elitist populism, they have attacked the middle class with their tax policies (and in a million other ways), they have attacked our active duty military by sending them back and back again to occupy Iraq, gays with their opposition to marriage equality (and again, in so many other ways), blacks with their opposition to affirmative action (and in so many other ways), and all non-Christians with their rhetoric of this being a Christian nation when it is, in fact, nothing of the sort.

All that is left are non-college educated white men, veterans of Vietnam and earlier generations, and fundamentalist Christians. The social conservatives have overreached, just as they did in the heyday of the John Birchers. They could not find the median voter with both hands. There was a time, and it is only now coming to an end, that the Republican Party was the aspirational party. It was a symbol of economic success, real or imagined. When you had arrived, you would lease a Range Rover, buy a McMansion and join the Republican Party.

It is my greatest hope that Republicans now are the party of failure, linked with George W. Bush rather than Reagan, and that their endless lurching from gimmick to gimmick and attack to attack has made it obvious to all that they hold citizens in contempt, particularly educated citizens. The Democratic Party is the party of Barack Obama, former Harvard Law Review editor, and the Republican Party the home of such lesser intellectual lights and George W. Bush and "Joe" the "Plumber." It is my hope that, for the 2/3rds of young people who voted Democratic in this election, it becomes a habit for life, and being a Republican is simply not acceptable or respectable, that it is no longer a sign of being someone who has made it and is therefore in need of tax cuts, but rather that you are a complete and total moron, and idiot, a dildo.

8. The other sort of dildo
See definition two

dildo
noun (pl2=dildoes)

1. An artificial phallus (penis), particularly for sexual uses, that may or may not appear realistic.
2. (pejorative) An idiot.

I like to use dildo this way because I recall my freshman lit prof used it to ask a question about the daughter in "The Glass Menagerie." She asked "Is she a dildo?" After a brief pause, I ventured a tentative "No?"

7. Not you personally
But some vets, my dad included, think all Democrats are Jane Fonda. There are lots of folk out there who wouldn't ever even seriously consider voting Democratic because of bitterness about the antiwar movement, the one forty years ago and the one today. Emotional appeals on this basis have been appealing to folks in that category.

The Republicans have had a lot of success appealing to vets. I do think, though, that many of the vets of the ongoing occupation of Iraq and the war in Afghanistan will trend Democratic. I wrote "Vietnam and earlier" because I wanted to delineate these folks out, not lump you in. Obviously, I didn't mean all vets will vote Republican, or do--my grandfather, a WWII and Korea infantryman, has never voted Republican in his life. Just as obviously, you're not an ignorant ass, or you wouldn't be here.

It is nice to see that, on the day after one the greatest successes in our party's history, we have not lost the fundamentally Democratic trait of squabbling and name-calling. :loveya:

11. I'm probably projecting some of my own daddy issues
Some bitterness about the way my dad abandoned his family after the war. He had some issues, but never sought help, because he's too big a man. I was three, but I'm over it, mostly.

It always rankles me to hear him go on about socialism when he gets a check from the government every month--when I ask him about that, his reply is an indignant "I earned it." He still hasn't figured out what to respond when I ask him if the folks who worked to build the helicopters and the rockets and the ammunition he used in that war also deserve decent health care and a secure retirement.... oh well. :hi:

10. Obviouly all vets are not voting Republican
I recall one career Marine I met while canvassing who said "I don't understand why folks think McCain's such a big hero, all he did was get shot down and captured."

If you know a way to peel vets out of the Republican coalition, let's go for it. The way I see it, two times we ran guys who had been to Vietnam, one of whom was a bona fide hero, against a Republican who had not, and veterans chose the Republican both times. And I have not seen the exit poll data, but I suspect they may have backed McCain this time.
