1. I think a lot of men...
vote Republican because it's the 'masculine' thing to do. So I wouldn't be surprised if there were some closet Dems out there.

I just don't trust the polling either, but for different reasons. I think they're are a lot of first time voters that aren't getting counted because they don't fall into the 'likely voter' category.

2. masculinity and republicanism...
all i can say is weak little 'pussies'..... they have to vote for a parody of masculinity...a tweaked up roid freak like governator and a rather well dressed up paper doll for a pee-resident

grrr....

3. I doubt also that the polls are catching newly registered voters
That have signed up in the last few months.

These are largely Kerry voters. Repubs generally register and vote as a birthright. The 'pubs have not been very succesful at signing new voters.

I know 5 that have registered for the sole purpose of defeating Buxh, myself.

What's more...i doubt it's an accident as a close race = good ratings.

4. I think you're right.
A lot of people think switching parties is a sign of weakness and won't admit it publicly. THey have a lot of emotional capital invested in their political ID. On the other hand, they have enough pragmatism to know that things are not going particularly well on both a micro and macro level. Their solutions will be:

(1) Not vote
(2) Vote Nader
(3) Vote Kerry

Pulling the lever for Bush, in the privacy of the voting booth, is a consious decision to support an administration that is not looking out for the average Republican voter's best interests.

Publicly, they will support their "home team"; privately, they'll vote for their best interests.
