My Message:

I am a lifelong NFL fan and have been watching Monday Night Football for more than 20 years. I find it incredibly inappropriate for the network to allow Al Michaels to air his political views on the air. Mr. Michaels has made it perfectly clear on a number of occasions that he is a rabid right-wing Republican. I find it reprehensible that he would attempt to use his position as a sports broadcaster to influence one of the most important elections in our nation's history -- especially by means of a cheap and dishonest sound byte directed against the Democratic nominee for President. Sports has long been an arena where people can come together and put aside their individual differences. It is a place where people can take a temporary break from some of the more disturbing aspects of world events and everyday life. Mr. Michaels has effectively tainted this experience for me and the millions of other people watching who don’t share his views.

I would be seething. I'm an avid football fan but sadly, this election has just absolutely consumed me.

One suggestion...while emailing complaints about a "flip flop" comment, include a sentence that is something to the effect of "Bush has Flim-Flammed your network and the country..." or words to that effect. But use the Flim-Flam. :)

... we are all pissed off because of the fact that this twit inserted his cheap and tacky political commentary into a venue that almost all people would love to see remain neutral.

For all we care, he can stand on any street corner and scream out whatever political eflluent that he desires. We never state that we want to shut him up - we would just prefer he take his political commentary and say it somewhere more appropriate if he desires. If he keeps on doing it on MNF, and ABC chooses to allow it, more power to them - it's their bullhorn. But they run the risk of losing many left leaning viewers. Like most of us here at DU.

But I agree with those who say that people who make their political leanings known shouldn't be surprised when they alienate part of their audience. It is perfectly reasonable to say that you will not buy another Dixie Chick album because of what they said about the war.

And it is equally reasonable to let ABC know that they are losing viewers if Al Michaels persists in coughing up these little gems.

There are consequences for taking a stand. Ask John Kerry. He's still trying work through his consequences. (How could anyone say he protested for political gain. What gain?!)
