By ELISABETH BUMILLER
OLMAR, Pa., Sept. 9 - President Bush began a new attack on Senator John Kerry's economic record on Thursday, terming the senator a wastrel who would raise taxes on ordinary Americans and significantly increase government spending.
"If you drive a car, Senator Kerry has voted for higher taxes on you,'' Mr. Bush told an invited Republican crowd in the Philadelphia suburb of Colmar. "If you have a job, he's voted for higher taxes on you. If you're married, or have children, he's voted for higher taxes on you.''
On a day when disputes over Mr. Bush's three-decades' old service in the National Guard were again dominating the presidential race, Mr. Bush went on the offensive over the bread-and-butter issues that Mr. Kerry has sought to make a new focus of his campaign.
Vice President Dick Cheney echoed the campaign's economic assault on Mr. Kerry. At what the Bush campaign billed as a town-hall meeting in a large convention center in Cincinnati, Mr. Cheney said Mr. Kerry and his running mate, Senator John Edwards of North Carolina, were "much more oriented towards enacting a lot of new taxes.''<snip>
