because as we post here op eds by the other side are claiming the exact opposite with the usual laundry list of intimidating data. That the NYT and WaPo and even CNN! are campaigning for Kerry.
So the trick is to avoid the he said/she said smoke of confused balance under whose cover the real flaws of national media will sneak away to continue their disservice to the American public.
Making the question one of competence is a recent good idea. The news media simply is incapable of casting a critical eye on a reported story or release from the campaigns. Not enough research. Less curiosity. No direct expertise, and if any, poorly related to the bigger picture so much so as to lose the audience to whom they are supposed to be making things clear to.
In "The Daily Howler" you can see the prejudiced lying that afflicts much of the media, yet underneath that most enraging and recent affliction you see an even more systemic incompetence. The mask of fury that the punditry always wears lately is their own way of escaping into the mist. Adding counter fury thickens the smoke.
To deride their sloppy reporting, being entertaining tools for their own private ownership rather than their public service, the slide into puppetry and amoral blurb contests, has been the task of The Onion and The Daily Show. They do it better, but is anyone getting the point other than cynicism and scorn from all sides? Amusing Will Rogers punchlines about how many journalists can dance on the head of any one journalist? isolated incidents, opinions about opinions, dragging by sheer force of LTTE's facts omitted and slant back into the vacuum? We have FAIR and many media watch groups- that nobody in turn is paying much attention to.
A voice crying in the parrot jungle. A real voice breaks through the phony on occasion. That must have a different character other than the petty rage and birdlike diatribes. We have had several such shocks(eg. Clark and Clarke), followed by silence, then by the jungle stirring back to life again.
We can submit to any media interested more in reaping untouched benefits from doing a good job for the public, not too compromised by its own greed or distance from the common man, that a withering competence would not only stifle all critics but would stand out and dominate the abandoned fourth estate left fallow by landlord tenants. It is unlikely an entertainment industry or a private corporation would have moral fiber or natural brains to do that. It is unlikely that the current mob can even see things for what they are.
But it is out there, this concept of factual, analytical, real world reporting. if someone does not start doing its job, the various competing crusaders will rip it from them and leave them more emasculated creatures of volume control than they are now.
The LTTE's should look to the other side which strives to imitate truth and in our way, DO A BETTER JOB of letting the devastating force of reality speak truth to media power. When the other side uses a fog of statistics, contain and destroy the distraction, not wade into the wallow. When lies counter claim, they have to be exposed as untruths, not argued on points that grant howling destructiveness some rational legitimacy. Waste no time or fury. Do their job. Point out they are not doing their job. Find sources that do.
The grand disconnect that cannot be refuted is that America stands alone, not in its force or moral courage, but in its self-deception. The media bears a heavy moral responsibility for the sidelining of dissent for the spread of deception, for the enforcement of cognitive dissonance. This they do not with the malevolent purposeful "genius" of Karl Rove, but with the cowardice born of incompetence, turning most against other truths and truth sayers who make that unconfrontable sin rise unbidden to their gorge. The presence in this miasma of individuals in the sytem does not obviate the overall sad state of affiars, nor are those jounralists secure in their jobs should a fraud triumph this time with their clownish help.
