Josh Marshall took the bait......
I'm actually supposed to be on semi-vacation here at the ocean. But let me offer an update on this memo business. One of the guys who was in the mix in all of this at the time -- Hodges -- told CBS that these documents accurately reflected Killian's
Advertisement thinking at the time. On top of that, the White House -- and thus the president -- made no effort to question the story the documents tell. That tells me that they know the underlying story -- or at least some rough approximation of it -- is true.

All that said, however, the questions raised about these documents seem very compelling. And though those points above are telling about the underling story, I can't see where they tell us much meaningful about the authenticity of these documents.

Over the last twenty-four hours I've received literally hundreds of emails that point out that each specific criticism, on its own terms, doesn't quite hold up. Thus, for instance, there definitely were proportional type machines widely available at the time. There were ones that did superscripts. There were ones with Times Roman font, or something very near to it.

But that only means that such a document could possibly have been produced at the time; not that it's likely. And taken all together, the criticisms raise big doubts in my mind about their authenticity. Adding even more doubt in my mind is that the author of this site was so easily able to use MS Word to produce a document that to my admittedly untrained eye looks identical to one of the memos in question. Identical.

That combined with the individual criticisms mentioned above seems very hard to get around.

1. What a dumbshit.
He should stay on vacation and let the smart people work this out.

It's been proven that commonly available IBM typewriters could create this document. All we need to seal the deal is to see the file these documents came from, I'm sure we'll see dozens if not hundreds of similar documents.

2.  the accuracy of the story doesn't depend on these documents
CBS had other sources and they are just laughing at this frenzy of despair from the other side. Josh is really just urging caution without knowing the whole story.

The documents are authentic, but it doesn't even matter.

Bush is not.

5. Who's a dumbshit here?
One thing's for sure, when this has settled, somebody will have egg on their face, and I'm not sure who it's going to be.
Rather than jump to the conclusion that I would like to see, I will wait for a proper analysis of these documents. Do you really trust CBS to verify them? I don't.
The haste with which fellow DUr's want to put down our allies is sad.
Josh Marshall is one of the good guys.

6. Well when the shape of the earth debate is settled, someone
will have egg on their face too. It's just that one side is overwhelmingly favored to lose, that's where Josh is

8. Anything can be made now on paper with Photoshop
Edited on Fri Sep-10-04 12:47 PM by zulchzulu
It's easy as hell to simulate ANYTHING on paper now.

The point is that thinking someone can line up a document produced and printed in Word to something typed on a Selectric years ago and call it invalid is a last card in the hand of a desperate player.

Furthermore, if people like Novak want CBS to produce their sources, then CBS should demand that Novak produce his source for outing Joe Wilson's wife as a CIA agent.

While the allegations about the memos are being hemmed and hawed, we could get another ball bouncing around and make the GOP do the squirm about something called treason.

It's tag team time.
