38. Reminds me of a bit from "Fear and Loathing on the Campaign Trail"

If anybody has ever read that classic campaign tale, the hysteria reminds me of that rumor that was floating around about Ed Muskie being addicted to some exotic east African narcotic. Hunter Thompson first reported the rumour for Rolling Stone. After that, the "legit" press picked up on it, and soon reporters from the straight media (like the NYT and WaPo) were asking Big Ed Muskie questions about his narcotics problems and "suspiciious" visits by doctors late at night.

All it took was Hunter Thompson to report that there was a rumor that Big Ed was on drugs. He never said whether the rumor was true, or where he first heard it. All he did was report that it EXISTED. And the hysteria ensued.

(Of course, the best part is that Thompson actually STARTED the bogus rumor, and completely hoodwinked the press into spreading it. Just goes to show how gullible and lazy the mainstream press can be.)
