Why AWOL story won't go away and we can thank the Repukes
I was among those who felt that the AWOL story as presented on 60 Minutes would not have legs, not with the press in this country. But this time the republicans and their friends in the media over reached.

They created another story by trying to discredit this one. By insisting that 60 Minutes ran a non-credible story they now have one of the most powerful news organizations in the World, CBS News, and the most influential news magazine franchise, 60 Minutes, and the one of the most trusted anchors on television, Dan Rather countering their claims to prove that their story was honest and accurate.

If Rove/Fox/MSGOP/ and the rest of the Bush apologists had just shrugged it off as another partisan attack--I think the story would have disappeared in a couple of days given the medias self-interests but now they woke up a sleeping GIANT and I don't think Dan Rather and CBS News is going to take this lying down.

1. I once thought Rove was behind the attempt to paint the docs as forgeries
I don't any longer.

If anything, I imagine Rove wants the Rightwingnut blogs to SUT THE FUCK UP now!

3. I said something similar yesterday
If the documents turned out to be false then it becomes a very big story as to where they came from and who was behind it. If they're not then the story runs longer than it would've.

6. If They're Forgeries, What About the WH-released copies of the same docs?
If they are forgeries, why did the White House release copies of the
same documents? This rather suggests that the forgers were in the
WH basement, and that these were leaked and then released in an attempt
to discredit the AWOL charges. But that seems like an extremely risky
strategy, as it has brought the whole AWOL issue out into the open in
a way we could never have done with our limited access to the media.

It could also be that they are letting the dogs howl about forgeries
just to give the swing voters an excuse to ignore the AWOL issue, though
anybody who thinks about it at all will see through it immediately.

Could it be that the once-invincible Karl Rove is losing it?

4. It will be talked about from now until the election by almost everyone
It is no where near over. It will continue to fester. Every Democrat who goes on any talk show will address it. Every paper from here to November 2nd will have some mention of it either by an article or a LTTE. It will not be silenced. It is gathering more momentum all the time. We have been talking about this story for four years here. It hasn't gone away.
