Rather has BURIED the claims of forgery
I will post an article when it comes. But he just buried them. The 'th' thing appeared in other Vietnam-era docs, so it existed. Times Roman has been around since the 1930s. A handwriting analyst has confirmed the signatures.

*And* he re-read the charges in simple, damning sentences.

Accused the people questioning him of being 'partisan political operatives.'

BURIED.

11. Somebody on DU posted the following... I can't vouch for it but
it seems quite good.

Here's the transcript of Rather's "on the street" interview with CNN:

Rather: The story is true. And the questions raised in the story are serious and legitimate questions.

The questions are: Did Lt. Bush refuse a direct order from a military superior in time of war? That's Question One. Question Two: was he suspended for failure to perform up tothe standards of the U.S. Air Force and the Texas National Guard? That's Number Two.

Three. Did he ever take the physical he was ordered to take by his military superior? Or if he didn't take that physical, why didn't he take that physical?

I want to emphasize that I stand behind my president. We're in a time of war and I stand behind my president. There's no joy in reporting such a story, but my job as a journalist is not to be afraid and when we come up with facts and legitimate questions that are supported by witnesses and documents which we believe to be authentic, to raise those questions no matter how unpleasant they are.

I do want to underscore with you that the White House took their shots at us today. The Bush Cheney campaign took their shots at us. They have not answered the question: did or did not the president obey a direct order from his military superior while he was a lieutenant, was he or was he not suspended for failure to meet performance standard of the Air Force and TANG, if he didn't take the physical, why didn't he take the physical? Also, one of the questions that's out there, where is the efficiency report every officer, particularly a flying officer, is supposed to have a yearly efficiency report. There is no such report for the last year. I emphasize again that there is no joy in asking these questions, but I think these are legitimate questions and I stand by the story.

Q. I wonder how you feel about the whole investigation

Rather: What investigation?

Q. We read that CBS is doing an internal invest

Rather: Where did you read that?

Q. Unintelligible

Rather: You should stay away from rumor mills. Where did you read that?

Q. The Washington Post article

Rather: No. They didn't say that in the Washington Post article. I don't want to argue with you. You were asking about a rumor. You know the internet is filled with all kinds of rumors. I like a rumor as much as the next fella. But it's umportant to recognize what's a rumor and what's a fact. Sometimes the rumors are true. In this case they're not. There's no internal investigation. I'm happy in my work, as you can see. I'm proud of our story. I'm proud of CBS News I'm proud of the team I work with and stand with them completely. I appreciate the sources who took risks to authenticate our story. One - there's no internal invest. Two - someone may be shellshocked but it is not I and not anybody at CBS news. And you can tell who's shellshocked by the ferocity of people who are spreading these rumors.

Q. When there's significant evidence that those documents may have been forged or created at a later date, do you think there's any requirement or are you considering any kind of apology or retraction"?

Rather: Number One. I know that this story is true. I believe the witnesses and documents are authentic. We wouldn't have gone to air if they had not been. There isn't going to be an apology . . . hasn't even been discussed, nor should there be.

I want to make clear to you this story is true. And more important questions than how we got the story which is where those who don't like the story would like to put the emphasis. The more important question is what are the answers to the questions raised in the story.

43. No. Bitchslap might have been the effect but it was way more classier..
He is simply a newsman with integrity trying to get to the bottom of a story and he won't be deterred or intimidated.

Watching the parade of smartly dressed, capped-teeth whores trying to go toe to toe with him, asking him to give up his sources, asking for retractions and apologies makes me puke and laugh at the same time. About all they can do right is cut to a TV poll or Scott Peterson.

I have appreciated your nightly newscasts for some time now, and your displayed strength tonight is commendable. Our country is at a crossroads, being led by men similar to those who destroyed Enron, Adelphia, Tyco, etc. Our country and constitution is not a rock, impervious to all. It is a living thing, more like a tree, requiring nourishment and protection from the evil forces which would just as soon cut it down.

Thank you for doing what you can.

Regards,

Here's what I wrote:
"There are MILLIONS of us out there who are behind you one hundred percent and have been waiting for a news organization with the guts to ask hard questions of this administration and refuse to back down. If the media in this country had done that during the lead-up to the Iraq War, perhaps 1000+ dead Americans and countless Iraqis would still be alive. I used to watch CBS News by default because it came on after what I was watching but you can be assured that I will be making a POINT of tuning in from this point on."

Everyone, PLEASE contact them. We may be witnessing the last vestiges of an independent media if we don't back up CBS with our support and our viewership.

Mr. Rather,

Your piece on the Bush ANG documents on 60 Minutes was brilliant. Those of us who have known the truth all along have been waiting for someone with the integrity, character and courage to stand up and present the facts in this matter.

The truth is never partisan. That is why the truth is something every American deserves to hear. Unfortunately, it is something that is all too rare in the 21st century spin-mode media.

You, Sir, are a credit to the profession of journalism. Real journalism.

Sincerely,

35. And NBC (Owned by GE) still repeats the lies!
A couple of minutes after Dan finished his report on the accusations aboutb the documents relating to Airhead's National Guard service, I switched to NBC for a minute.
They were still yammering on about the documents being forged because of the "th" superscript key -- a claim Dan debunked minutes earloier.

Suggestion to NBC News : if you want to find out what's going on, I suggest you tune in to CBS Evening News.

It ought to be clear now to anyone with either two brain cells to rub together, or the slightest shred of integrity, that these documents are genuine, and the facts they state are a damning indictment of the lies and fraud that constitutes the life story of the Crawford coward.

The questions are: Did Lt. Bush refuse a direct order from a military superior in time of war? That's Question One. Question Two: was he suspended for failure to perform up to the standards of the U.S. Air Force and the Texas National Guard? That's Number Two. Three. Did he ever take the physical he was ordered to take by his military superior? Or if he didn't take that physical, why didn't he take that physical?

On my ride home from work tonight I was just despondent; I'd been reading all these articles about the alleged forgery and I couldn't figure out why the hell the "mainstream" media had allowed itself to be so totally sidetracked by the right wing noise machine. Again.

I can't tell you how happy and relieved it makes me to see Rather staying focused and restating those questions. Really. There are no words.

53. HERE IS THE "INSIDE SKINNY" ON WHAT IS GOING ON-GOING DOWN!
Dan Rather is a Texas native. He was born and raised outside Houston and then after completing college, cut his television journalist teeth at a National network station in Houston.

He took on the Bush Family "Texas Mafia"(BFTM) several times in the early 70's, and this current situation is more of the "blood feud" between he and H.W. Bush. Dan Rather is very solid, a real pro, first-class credibility (unlike those flake GOP-ops reporters at Fox), and will NOT back down from a deal that he knows he is right. I/we have never seen Dan do it once in 35 years!

The Bush Family Texas Mafia (BFTM) tries to destroy anyone that takes them on, hell just look at their damn track record. You all know this!

More importantly, we will make some phone calls on this deal, and in particular if CBS “60 Minutes” has something cooking to bag the BFTM on several matters we are aware. We keep hearing "little things" on this subject, plus the Washington Post has been digging on this next deal for over a year.

It has to do with the Bush Family corruption, documents the Fed accidentally discovered at Enron (which was a Bush Family business "front operation"), and Bush's "War Dog" House Majority Leader Tom DeLay (Houston) being under a massive Texas criminal grand jury investigation, for fraud, bribery, extortion, money laundering, and criminal abuse of his political office.

The big kicker is Bob “$200,000 donor to O’Neill’s SBVT” Perry (Houston) is involved with DeLay in his criminal enterprise and we mean BIG TIME! Also eleven (11) other BFTM members are involved, in varying degree, including the Texas Governor and other ranking elected State officials, and many of them could go to jail over this deal.

The BFTM is doing everything possible to keep the lid on it, and also get W elected. BFTM needs W elected so he can do Presidential Pardons for BFTM Enron buddies, (Ken Lay), DeLay, Perry, and others that get convicted and sent to prison over this massive criminal enterprise.

That in a nutshell is what’s going on with all the Bush-Cheney-GOP totally outright fraud in their campaign. They don’t have a platform to run on, so the con and fraud game is all they got! They are going nuts because Rather stuck his nose in it. If you recall Dan Rather has stayed pretty neutral in his reporting on the O’Neill-SBVT fraud scam. We know, what I just delineated, because we are well connected Republicans, have several influential Houstonians in our “Beat Bush” cartel, along with two Houston criminal attorney’s – NKR

PS: It should be noted that CBS is owned by Viacom. 70-75% of campaign donations by Viacom (VIA) executives and its political action committee, have gone to the Democratic Party and its candidates.

special "military typewriters." Could it be?

Seriously, for your information, superscript has been available on some typewriters for a very long time. And it doesn't always look exactly the same. But one tip-off is the line underneath it, as exhibited even on the very distorted online versions of the Killian memos. That was a classic typewriter rendition of superscript.

46. The superscript "th" in the forged documents was raised half-way above the typed line (consistent with MS Word, but inconsistent with military typewriters which kept everything in-line to avoid writing outside the pre-printed boxes of standard forms).

It's a coincidence, but the freeps seem to know about the military typewriters too!

92. Oh, for Christ's sakes! I have typed on a Selectric typewriter...
since the 60's for goodness sakes, being a secretary, first for the Congress and later, for law firms. Yes, we "squeezed" letters (proportional spacing) so many times to fit on documents that were "whited out" at the last minute before filing a legal document at the last minute before copying and running the filing to the court house or to administrative agencies! Yes, you could squeeze type from an IBM Selectric and also move the platen one-half space up or down to do superscripts or subscripts! This whole argument by the Bush campaign is so stupid, considering the many secretaries and typists who know the truth about IBM Selectrics, and superscripts and subscripts before the era of the wordprocessor!

81. My letter to CBS News
Dear CBS News & Dan Rather,

I would like to commend you in advance for not succumbing to pressure to drop or degrade your coverage of Killian's memos. I understand this will be difficult, and you probably have a horde of rightwingers ticked as all get-out right now for practicing responsible journalism. Please don't hesitate to pull out the old IBM Composer if you need to do some live on-the-air debunking. The vetting of the signatures and the corroborative living witnesses make a compelling case independent of the typesetting, of course.

I trust that once the other news outlets have gotten over their jealousy at being scooped by your team, they'll give out appropriate apologies to the public whose trust they've abused.... not.

The "methodology" (if it can be called that) by which other major news networks have co-created a mammoth fiction that began as little more than a poorly-evidenced rumor on certain reactionary websites is itself worthy of examination. I'm sure you could do an excellent job of exposing this rumor mill, and its effect on the degraded state of American journalism.

You guys are doing a great job this week. Thank you for not caving in to the demands of echo-chamber-driven fanatics. True journalism is about something of a higher order, and Dan Rather has shown me that he respects it.

Best Regards,
xxxxxxxxxxxxx

84. I now raise my odds, 100:1 says Rather has additional documents
and he's just WAITING for any high level Republican to cry foul.

What I am saying is, Rather has additional documents from the same batch that are 100% unrelated to this story, but have Killian's signature and were typed on the same typewriter. To top it off, there would be copies already obtained from official Pentagon records that are buried somewhere.

He's too damn smart to get caught on something like this. This should show EVERYBODY something. Those who followed my ribbon story should be familiar with the level of detail I examined, however, the story itself is not 100% solid without a copy of the regulations from the time period. Ergo, no RESPONSIBLE journalist is going to run with it.

By comparison, the infowhores on cable news didn't just run with rumors from the internet, they jumped into a jet and went mach 3 as soon as Freepers screamed JUMP!

This is where a liberal differs from a conservatives. Liberal dot all "i's" and cross all "t's" before running with something nationally. Conservative infotaniment whores just plain don't give a shit.

I always thought Dan was a real journalist, but when, during the "selection" he declared that Bush was his "president", and he was not questioning all the things that we were questioning, I thought that he had gone over to the dark side. Perhaps he did at the time, but now I think he has realized where his real feelings lay. About time, I say to Dan, and Thank the Good Lord for it!

95. I need some information
Puke associate claims that contrary to 60 minutes' assertion, the other guy (H something) is not only not a Republican, but he gave something like $2500 to Dean. (Is that even legal?) Anybody here about this or has any info to debunk it?

And also: He said showed me a web page with a Selectric manual. The "superscripts" aren't really superscripts at all in this manual. They are simply full-size characters written half a line up. Now, I know some manual typewriters had shifted keys that could produce a "TH," like the document Rather showed. And I think the Selectric manual was a lot older than 1973. But does anyone recall a Selectric with shrunken superscripts like are on the document?
