How come sometimes he talks with a phony Southern accent and sometimes he doesn't. What's up with that? It would be so easy to collect a little footage illustrating that.

1. I made a remark in another thread ...
Edited on Fri Sep-10-04 06:26 PM by nownow
about the Texas accent, but I have to tell you -- I don't really think it's a pure Texas accent. What the Dim Son actually has is that generic military accent so many guys have who were in the Air Force and went through basic training in Texas, at Lackland. I've known other Texans who didn't have it, but a lot of long-time Air Force guys, no matter where they came from, had it. I'm sure he just trots it out when he's speaking to people who can reasonably be expected to respond to somebody with that accent -- rural people, southerners and military people, especially. My two cents on it, at least.

2. A prime example.
At the RNC, he said the word "rather" with a northeastern accent. Like Teddy Kennedy. No one in Texas would say it like that EVER (at least as far as I know :).

4. Yes, please.
I've been wondering about that for years. Why doesn't Jeb talk that way?

5. Excellent idea! "How Texan Is This Man?"
Have some **real** Texans ask this, behind a quick montage of *'s now-you-hear-it, now-you-don't phony dialect!

:bounce:

6. When he gave that speech to the rich people, in tails...
and he said, "Some people call you the elite (?). I call you my base."

I don't recall he wore the accent at that time.

I think we could just download video from the WH website and prove this definitively.

7. Texas is a big place.
There are different dialects in different areas. Folks in Houstan have a different drawl than folks in Midland. That said, having grown up there, I can say that the put-on dialect that Bush* uses is not Texan. It is fake. Like his walk.

He grounded himself to avoid testing positive for coke. That's why he refused to take the physical.

11. This may seem minor, but it's one big part of Bush - HE'S A PHONY
Lied about WMDs in Iraq. Lied about his Guard Service. The ranch isn't really a ranch and he only bought it for the 2000 campaign. The accent is phony. The bravado is false.

12. How about the fact that he's afraid of horses.
Doesn't that bother the average stupid white guy?

13. Do Texans realize that Bush was born in Connecticut?
Do they even know that he went to Andover, a Prep school where he was a cheerleader? Do they know that he is a graduate of Yale, and of Harvard?

I'll just bet that a lot of Bush loyalists have no idea that his phoney accent is meant to disguise these awful Yankee roots! How can we expose these Bush "crimes"? Is there some Redneck press out there?

14. I heard Bush slip the other day...
In the middle of his "Texas Twang" he slipped and said "rawther" insted of "raaather" in a sentence. The former usage is uniquely New Englander.

15. Right - that was in his convention speech
Very funny, too. He was probably trying to do his middle of the road accent and messed it up. He's a little bit country, he's a little bit rock and roll.
