I know a bit about the 1960's ANG scenario. I managed to get into it in
1964 after a very long wait...yes it was to avoid getting sent to Viet Nam, I admit it. After a year or so, I made enough friends to know that some of my squadron mates had gotten in through political or other influence...actually one good friend was the son of the State Commanding General (which led to some 'interesting' times at summer camp, usually held at Keesler AFB in MS, but that's another story.)

I did something like what Chimpy appears to have done, I skipped a couple months of "drills" and was transferred to the regular AF. But my dad was dead, not a Congressman. So I had to finish up my time in the USAF...I -COULD- have sent to VN but was not; that was beyond my control, I spent almost all of the remaining time at what was then Ent AFB in Colorado Springs coordinating "Broken Arrow" exercises for Gen.
Egan. And running errands for Colonel M.M.

But I never refused a flight physical.

1. And ENT AFB is now the US Olympic Training Center
for those that may not have known...:)

2. I didn't know that, thanks for the tip. I do believe what was the "other
part" of the base, Peterson Field (which was also the CO Springs airport back then) is still active, but I'm not sure about that.
;-)

3. National Guard
When I went to basic in November, 1968, I was entertained by the then Kansas City Athletics National Guard as they practiced throwing down our company street into an overturned helmet. I was shipped to Viet Nam. They went to spring training. How did they arrange to complete their military obligation in the off season? And you have questions about George Bush. A Nation of fools deserves him to lead you.
