Dan Rather did for Journalism what Dean did for the dems.....a spine was
transplanted by CBS and Dan Rather....may all the rest who call themselve journalists pay attention and grow one.

Rather displayed oldtime journalism...with courage and resolve. He is turning the boat into the fire.

3. THIS is the equivalent of
the turning point in the McCarthy years, I think.

Normal Americans will think, "Have they no sense of decency, at long last?"

4. Us retired journalists have spines.
The problem is those who would hire us don't. We are the guys who went after and got Richard Nixon during Watergate, and Reagan during Irangate and several other gates......
But now the news biz moguls have slammed shut those same gates. I personally never had a boss tell me how to cover a story and what to include and what to ignore, but lately I have talked to colleagues who are going thru that now.

sigh!

6. I feel bad for your profession
but I bless you for what you did. You are a true patriot.

Sadly, I think America will need to learn some hard lessons before it wakes up to the fact that journalism cannot be just spin or entertainment. It is vital to the survival of our nation.

But it will get out in the end. Thank God for the US Constitution and the First Amendment.

9. newscaster...I meant the info-tainment folks who call themselves
journalists...but are just talk show hosts. You are from another era and we all miss that....so..don't think I was insulting the professionals...I was insulting the actors who call themselves journalists.

5. He struck a resounding blow tonight
but we're a long way from having cured American journalistic passivity.

If he's still doing his job in the weeks ahead I'll be impressed.

7. Reports of a spinal transplant are premature
Edited on Fri Sep-10-04 07:27 PM by depakote_kid
and greatly exaggerated.

The media isn't about to stop concealing Bush's failures and promoting Republican deception. However, the lesson for the Kerry camp here is that it pays to be controversial- that's what gets media attention for our side. Fail to generate controversy, and the media will ignore you (along with all of your fine press releases).

11. Rather is the last true heir to Edward R. Murrow
Edited on Fri Sep-10-04 08:05 PM by Lancer
Can't express my admiration adequately.

Plus, he looks and sounds sick as a dog this week. I'm sure he felt his (and the network's) integrity was on the line big time with this story, and he wasn't going to throw the ball to a second stringer like John Roberts or Scott Pelley.

newscaster, I salute you.

All of my family are retired ink-stained wretches with typewriters that dropped y's and required three key strokes to get an exclamation point. They covered the courts and city hall, wrote editorials and reviews. I dabble, but they were the pros. Couldn't be more proud of my pedigree.

14. I'm proud of Dan Rather
Any other journalist would've cracked under the stress they're placing on him to blurt out that the story was a farce. Kudos to Dan and old-time journalism!
