The Tall Texas Flyboy (poem-ette)
THE TALL TEXAS FLYBOY

Out on the horizon
Flying fast and flying high
A pilot and his warplane
Went streaking 'cross the sky
Checking out the Gulf of Mexico
And finding it all clear
He called back on his radio:
”No Viet Cong out here!”

He was a tall Texas flyboy
Each day he took a stand
'gainst the North Vietnamese
Trying to ford the Rio Grande
Then he'd hoist a beer or two
Toast those boys across the sea
And say "If any gooks get through
They'll have to deal with me!”

From the West Texas hills
To the Alabama swamp
He quietly did his duty
Without preening, pride or pomp
And so humbly did he answer
Our nation's urgent call
Sometimes it even seemed
Like he wasn't there at all

He was a tall Texas flyboy
He kept our country safe
If you don't believe it, why, boy
Just ask Murdoch, Ailes or Scaife
Let the liberals moan and cry, boy
He's got wars he has to fight
And 'though a few will die, boy
The tall Texas flyboy
Will keep giving it a try, boy
Until he gets one right.
