3. Wait a Minute!
Weren't there blow-up photos of the memos posted here which showed irregularities in the letters? Typewriter characters show wear and some irregularity. How could that be faked on a word processor?

I mean, I can't be sure the documents are genuine, but the blowups I saw definitely did NOT come straight from a word processor.

7. I know the documents are genuine. I think you're missing the point.

A real forger would do REAL forgery. If I were a forger - of which I am not, but I'd hate to think I'm smarter than a real forger about forgery - I would buy a typewriter available at the time the documents were to have been originated and type them on that. So, these people crying forgery and claiming the documents were made on a computer assume forgers are as stupid as they are.

Does that make sense? In any case, CBS has stated they did not rely solely on the documents in question, but also on interviews with people familiar with the man who wrote them and other verifiable evidence.

On edit: I would think, if this gets really serious, the ORIGINAL documents would have to be provided to forensic experts. They could test ink, compare them to other documents created by Killian (possibly on the same typewriter, or documents prepared by his staff on their typewriters) and who knows, there could even be fingerprints. I don't think CBS is going out on this limb without a safety net.

13. and I also do not think that CBS will put the credibility of their entire
news section on the line over this..they have way too much to lose..and as they are part of the right wing press, they are certainly not going to risk loosing their most precious asset..advertisers ,to bring down Bush.

get real guys..have faith

5. Yes, it is clear that someone willing to pull a stunt like this would
also type the stupid memos on an old typewriter.

Who in the heck would go to all the trouble to fake Killian's signature and think up these memos and then NOT use a typewriter?

Also, if you were going to FAKE the memos, wouldn't you make them a tad more scandalous than they are? (Not that they aren't, but who wouldn't sex them up a bit, if they were faking them anyway?)

Logic is apparently lost on a great many people, and CNN too.

10. you would have needed a copy of another document to copy
the style and manersims of the writer..so why produce a computer forgery..you would simple do out and purchase a typewriter..hell I've 3 of the damned things over 30 years old in my garage !!

12. Their tactic is clear
Make a charge, any charge. Then hope that the oposition has to waste a week debunking your claim, Meanwhile, the clock ticks and no real issues get debated. Slick, eh?

14. The arguments were dumb, dumb, dumb.
Here's a page from adobe on the history of Times New Roman. You know, the font that wasn't invented yet:

http://store.adobe.com/type/browser/P/P_1266.jhtml

In 1931, The Times of London commissioned the Monotype Corporation, under the direction of Stanley Morison, to design a newspaper typeface. According to Morison: “The Times, as a newspaper in a class by itself, needed not a general trade type, however good, but a face whose strength of line, firmness of contour, and economy of space fulfilled the specific editorial needs of The Times.” Times New Roman, drawn by Victor Lardent and initially released in 1932, is the result. The Linotype version is called Times Roman. Research into legibility and readability led to a design that was unique in newspaper typography; it is based on old style (or Garalde) types, and has greater contrast and is more condensed than previous newspaper types. Times New Roman continues to be very popular, particularly for newspapers, magazines, and corporate communications such as proposals and annual reports.
