Oh man...glad to find out my parents are voting for Kerry...
Maybe I shouldn't have been, but I was worried. My folks are in their mid 50's and what I would describe as moderate Dems. They are somewhat old school but almost always vote Dem despite it being in their worst interests financially (they do very well for themselves). But they are not hyper-informed and sometimes they'll say stuff that made me question where they stood in this election, and my mom sometimes forwards me stupid right wing e-mails that she get sent to her by friends. Especially since 9/11 (We live in NJ) which hit them really hard, I've been worried about how it would shift them politically, even if it was slight. And I don't frequently talk politics with them. But today my mom and I were talking politics and she confirmed how much she dislikes Bush and how she would never vote for him and is voting for Kerry.

This made me breathe a little sigh of relief since if we lost them as moderate dems, my feeling was that it wouldn't bode well overall.

1. yay for you
wish I could say the same for my mom. Yesterday she was saying how happy she was Saddam was out of power. I said, "Are you so happy you're willing to spend $500 per month for your household alone? Because that's what the war is costing you." I then said, "What if a home alarm system came to your door and wanted to sell you an 'iffy' security system for $500 a month? Would you buy it?"

Bob Herbert reports in his column today that 42 per cent of Americans still believe Saddam had something to do with terrorism.

2. Politics can be a mine field
Thankfully, my dad has been telling me for years how wrong * is, and I agree. Also have 2 sisters who are in agreement, but it's those 2 retired brothers who think * can do no wrong, and I just don't get it.

3. Saw a bunch of retired Military senior citizens...
they were wearing their little military cap...out to lunch as a group, driving their carpooling van. I made a comment to the senior wearing a Marine insignia...."my hub was in the Marines." Senior love to talk and love the attention of younger people. We exchanged details about the Marines...etc.

He asked who was I voting for. I said, "I can't vote for bush because he has bankrupt our nation and because I believe in the separation of church and state, and bush injects too much religion into his politics..and religion separates people." I said to myself, "OK, this old Marine is going to kick my ass"...Another Senior jumps in and shouts..."We are retired Military for Kerry." It was the happiest day of my life. We laughed so much..

The Seniors said they were insulted by the dirty politics of bush and the swift boat lies, and abuse of power. They were insulted by bush who spoke to their Military retired group, then behind their backs cut back their Military benefits and raised their Medicare dues...'bush thinks we didn't notice...we may be old but not fools.'
I looked back at their van, and they had Kerry stickers all around their van.

I came home so excited...went to the Kerry website and volunteered to work for Kerry. I'm attending my first Kerry meeting this Sunday.

4. Your one mistaken belief:
It is NOT in their best interests financially to vote Repug. It is in their worst interests. They might save a few thousand in taxes with Repugs, but they end up paying through the nose in additional state taxes, higher fees, lower investment returns, and future tax liabilities linked to unmanagable government debt.

DO NOT BUY INTO THE LIE THAT WEALTHY PEOPLE DO BETTER WITH REPUGS IN CHARGE. That's plain wrong.

And speaking upon general perceptions.
