I registered 9 new voters today
One was a 17 year old going to be 18 in October another was an 81 year old woman. New registrations were over 90% democrats.

4. I was outside a walmart
and the young man (17 year old)only came up to buy a soda from the machines and I asked him if he was old enough to vote. He said no and I asked if he would be 18 by 11/2 and he said yes. He said he wanted anybody but Bush. I convinced him to make his point in a voting booth. I am particularly pleased getting him registered.

5. The group of volunteers I am with
managed to register about 300 at a local college campus this past week. Rules are that you have to be non-partisan to be a Voter's Registration volunteer, but it is interesting to hear all the comments from passerby and new registrants.

13. With such an abysmal voter turnout,
it's very important to get people out to vote no matter who they'll vote for. Seriously, 50% isn't worthy of a democracy. Even if they vote for Bush, it's important that they vote. I know that that's a very dangerous position, considering that if Bush wins, there mightn't be any serious elections again, but if this is the last, it should be a good one.

Good job!

8. Thanks
We did 60 outside F911 a couple of months ago.

I still have to get back to an 80-something woman who hasn't voted since the 1950s. I found her down the block when I was gathering ballot position signatures.

11. Good for you!
If half the energy on DU spent on "the sky is falling" posts was expended on registering new voters our victory would be assured.

12. Great! Great! Great!
How do you go about registering new voters? How do you find people who have never voted?

16. Details vary state to state
In Texas we get sworn in as volunteer deputy registrars which means we can help a voter make sure that all the information on the form is filled out and then turn the card in ourselves to the county---as opposed to just handing cards out and trusting that the new voter will remember to mail it in. I'm sure your local Democratic Party will be able to fill you in on details.

You can find people who've never voted wherever you find people. I've registered people in front of grocery stores, libraries, at bars, street festivals, political rallies and at work. Some people go door to door. Others work bus stops with a clip board.

Whatever you do, it's time to get busy. The deadline is fast approaching (Oct 4 here, probably the same in most states.) If 60,000 DUers register 20 voters each (not hard to do, I've done that in a day) we would have more than a MILLION new voters in November.
