So. Went to My First Dem Volunteer Rally of the Season Today
Probably about 50-60 people at county headquarters. All friendly, all positive, all determined to be given tasks and good instruction and get out there and do what needs to be done. Many, like myself are old hands and ready to make the push.

Singlemindedness of purpose and good homemade chocolate chip cookies were in evidence.

One woman, who admitted she is pathologically fearful of phone calling, as I am, said she has had the most amazing experiences. She has been calling undecideds about the US Senate race between Erskine Bowles and Richard Burr. She has been making 80 or so calls in an evening, and has been thrilled at her success in winning over the undecideds. She can't 'til next Wednesday to pick up a new list of names.

Alas, the young woman who ran the meeting was hopelessly disorganized. She had not availed herself of a calendar, and was repeatedly corrected by the friendly folks with day runners as she gave out incorrent deadlines for absentee ballot filing, voting overseas, etc., etc.

She did mention something she insisted is not an urban legend; that our solidiers in Iraq have forfeited the right to a secret ballot, and must fax their ballots back to the US. The reason being that voting for someone other than the President can be construed as betrayal of allegiance to the Commander in Chief. In other words, a vote for Kerry may subject the soldier to a dishonorable discharge. WTF? Is this true?

But after this young woman vacated the floor, an attractive man in his mid-forties, small in stature, wearing shirt and tie, took over. He looked vaguely like Jim McGreevey, but please don't take that in a perjorative sense. This guy is a Teamster, but Central Casting would not have chosen him in a million years.

Well, lemme tell ya, Trucker Boy set the room ON FIRE! He could warm up the room for Kerry-Edwards anywhere. Throughout his speech, I noticed the sign-up sheets being passed around even more rapidly. People were reaching over the food table to sign up on the charts on the walls.

Anyway, I came away without any "flare" (see: Office Space) no buttons, stickers or signs until the next shipment of Union-made product comes in. Some of the other volunteers told me they have been having to routinely replace their Kerry bumperstickers and the signs in their front yards. GRRRR. One guy said, "I guess they hate better than we do."

The minor depression I had on arrival faded; I came home with a free copy of Our Plan for America, and I'll be armed to make those dreaded phone calls whenever my Party needs me!

1. Good, thank you all!
Oh, and get rid of the bad leader -- do whatever it takes.

The strong and effective have to push forward now. It is not for themselves -- it is for the nation!

And the time is now!
