Lying in an Oregon Voter Pamphlet is a FELONY
Did GW Bush mistate his service record in Oregons 2000 election voting materials?

Thats a felony.

About a decade or so ago,Rep Wes Cooley-R OR-2nd congressional district, got busted and convicted for lying about his service record in the Oregon Voters Pamphlet. Wes Cooley had stated that he'd served in combat in Korea. Turns out he had'nt.

Poor ol Wes did community service cleaning up roadside trash as a member of a crew of miscellaneous sundry law-violators.

1. Hmmm, that would be an interesting point to bring up in LTTE sent to
Oregon newspapers.

4. Good idea.
Where is the original source? I'll forward it to my mom in Oregon; she'll write letters!

2. Wes Cooley
That guy was nuts.

He was elected in 1994 to Congress. Turns out he had claimed that he was in "Special Forces - Korea" in his voter's pamphlet statement. When called on it, he named a sergeant who could vouch for him, but he said the sergeant was dead.

Turns out, unfortunately for Wes, the sergeant was alive and called Wes a lyin' sonofabitch. Which he was.

Sounds familiar, doesn't it?

3. Maybe so, but it's done routinely
I haven't looked at the statute or the case law- so I'm not sure exactly what "lying" means, but there are demonstrably false statements of fact intended to deceive in damn near every single voters' pamphlet that's put out. Look at what initiative supporter/defenders often submit- unbelievable. The AG's office would be overwhelmed if they tried too enforce the law!

Although I hasten to add that it would be in EVERYONE'S best interest if they did so.
