2. Yes, it's automatic unless they vote against it...
More info HERE:

Congress automatically gets a pay raise each year, and has to introduce legislation to prevent the increase. Although legislation to halt the Congressional raise has been introduced, the most supported bill (H.R. 5087) has just 34 co-sponsors, far short of the 218 necessary for passage.

"As lawmakers make a big show of forcing auto executives to accept just $1 a year in salary, they are quietly raiding the vault for their own personal gain," said Daniel O'Connell, chairman of The Senior Citizens League (TSCL). "This money would be much better spent helping the millions of seniors who are living below the poverty line and struggling to keep their heat on this winter."

According to a Congressional Record Service dated November 26, 2008, lawmakers will receive a 2.8 percent increase in pay next year, from $169,300 to $174,000.

3. god I hope so
At $143,000 / year they're already barely getting by.
If the average American family was only getting that much they'd probably have to learn to spend in frivolous ways they've never even considered.

keeping checks and balances on both the Judiciary and the Executive branches that they deserved a pay raise. 'Cause a good Congress ensures that our soldiers are never sent by a corrupt President to fight wars for no goddamned good reason. A good Congress protects The Constitution.

Oh, and while we're at it, fuck the UAW. Those assholes need to take a pay cut before they'll see a dime of our tax dollars. I'm so glad Congress is watching out for the tax payer in this one instance. Nevermind the automakers (barring the CEO's) don't make a fifth of what Congress does.

Of course, it is perfectly okay that executives used 1.6 billion of our tax dollars for 'incentive' pay. It would have been an atrocity had Congress not made sure all those execs were well taken care of. Unlike all of us serfs, they need private jets and vacation packages to ensure they do their jobs. Although those fuckers didn't do their jobs, did they? Their companies sank like stones.

I'm sorry about all the sarcasm, but I'm so fed up I'm ready to jump on the first revolution anyone puts out there.

7. They adjust for cost of inflation and it is expensive to maintain two residences
Some of them are independently wealthy and have no problem affording it. But some are not, and IMO, wealth should not be a prerequisite for the expense of holding political office.

I would have no problem with them adjusting their own salaries for inflation, but they need to do the same for the minimum wage.

8. Yeah, but,,
too bad that they can't see that we need raises to adjust for inflation. Minimum wage, people on fixed incomes,etc...
