As a member of the gay and lesbian community please allow me to apologize...
Edited on Sun Dec-21-08 08:23 PM by AntiFascist
the Warren issue has become extremely emotionally charged and I do see some comments made by GLBT supporters attacking other DUers which have gone too far over the top. I won't comment on the equally disturbing comments coming from the other side, except to say that they are disturbing as well.

Having said that, Rick Warren is a slimey, asswipe who should be shamed out of giving the invocation at Obama's inauguration. You may continue with the lively discussion, Happy Holidays!

1. I don't think people have been over the top, but I have seen some DUers try to shut others up
about this issue.

And he is a slimey asswipe who should never have been invited. I'm amazed such a creature was!

13. It's amazing that one of the most **ahem** contentious posters ...
on this issue admits that she is actually isn't even GLBT.

Things that make you go, "Hmmmmm...."

18. Oh I see. If I were it would make my words more legitimate? Plus you make amply clear....
that you think the ONLY ONES pissed off about this are gays.

In case you haven't heard, Rick Warren is against women having ownership of their uterus, and I am a woman.

The man is a pig and this is definitely an interesting precedent for Obama to be setting.

I'm not gay, and I am totally in support of the GLBT community here.

and I am not too contentious, yet, but keep up the bullshit you've been posting and you'll see some contention.

2. I understand the emotion
Edited on Sun Dec-21-08 08:07 PM by Gman
I really do. But nothing screws up things faster than emotion. All reason is lost.

The bottom line is the inauguration is ceremonial bullshit that even killed one president. What matters starts January 5 for Congress and January 20 for Obama.

11. The "house gay" reference is extremely offensive. Can you please
knock it off? It's making light of slavery, which is not cool.

"House slaves" may have worked inside, but they were still f*cking slaves--subject to rape and abuse! They would have gladly traded the "house slave" status for freedom.

12. Okay, I'll call them Uncle Lizas, even if my post was appropriate
They may have traded "house slave" status for freedom, but they wouldn't have traded it for "field slave" status, and the master knew that and played them off each other, which is exactly what is happening now.

8. Not my intention...

in fact I very much feel the anger that "those other gays" feel and would say a few choice words if I could get away with it. I do want to acknowledge that there are plenty of reasonable arguments that can be used against that slime, Rick Warren, without resorting to personal attacks against fellow DUers.

16. LOL, its bad when we start eating our own...

I respect Stevietheman and think he gave a very sincere post about his feelings on the issue and don't feel he deserved to be called names. ('Uncle Tom' might be ok, but only if you're gay yourself - eek, I'll probably get in trouble for that one). There are plenty of straight DUers who may feel the same way and I don't feel they deserve to be called names either.

24. Thank you
There have been people on both sides that have been over-the-top on this issue. I don't mind people giving their thoughts. I do mind that people seem to need to start a new topic on it to express that thought. I also mind very much that people try to post anything related to the inauguration ceremony and it turns in to YAWT (Yet Another Warren Thread).

Please show me and my brothers and sisters the same respect. If and when I feel I've been overboard, I'll apologize. Until then, please let us all speak for ourselves. Fuck Rick Warren and the religious right and fuck ANYONE who backs them in any way. They hate me and I return the favor.

28. That's why I worded it the way I did...

I was tempted to say "on behalf of the gay and lesbian community" but I knew better than to do that. Let me repeat, I totally understand your anger, but I think that reasoned arguments (and particularly legal arguments) can win in this case.

31. just a thought . . . what if Warren is not a "slimey asswipe?" . . .
what if, instead, he is simply misinformed and ignorant when it comes to homosexuality and gay marriage? . . .

in the past decade, literally millions of Americans have changed their minds about gay marriage . . . there's no reason that, given the proper information and a little time, Rick Warren can't do the same . . . or, for that matter, Barack Obama . . . maybe they both just need some good teachers to correct their ignoratnt and misinformed thinking on the issue . . .

like I said, just a thought . . .

35. It's creeps like him that are slowing down that shift in attitudes -
the media makes this guy a "guru of all things Christian", and too many people are willing to take his word as the most sacred interpretation of the Bible, rather than doing the "hard work" themselves...

39. It would be great if he could prove me, and others, wrong...

I would be the first to eat my words and say that I totally misjudged his character and misconstrued Obama's motives.

My characterization of him is based mostly on his media appearances and what he has said about the gay "lifestyle". Not only that, but I feel that his agenda also includes throwing the rest of America under the bus where it comes to the economy, based on what he has said about the root causes of the economic downturn. If he does interact with gay people then I'm sure that there has been plenty of effort to educate him already.

Rick Warren is a slimey, asswipe who should be shamed out of giving the invocation at Obama's inauguration.

One would have to have the capability of feeling shame in order to be shamed into or out of anything. I don't believe THIS slimy ass-wipe has that capability.

38. As a member of the hetero community, allow me to apologize as well.
A lot of the comments from all camps in this battle have been downright disturbing. It's a sad day when we see DUers being intolerant of one another and the rise of McCarthyism on DU all at the same time. Emotion makes fools of us all, from time to time.

It's time for us to work TOGETHER to heal DU and ensure equality for all Americans. It won't happen if we continue to lob verbal grenades at each other.
