It was December 18, 2005. It could be argued that he mocked this phrase his entire life. True, but on this night, his outlandish presidency became more absurd.
What happened? bush used this speech to rally support for his immoral war. He included the same old features of fear of terror and 9/11. Of course these were complete lies as was the original and often variable reasons for starting the war in the first place.
He ended the speech with a quote that included the phrase "Peace on Earth Good Will To Men." In fact he sat there and proclaimed that he was right. What an absurdity! Here's some more of the quote: "God is not dead, nor (does) He sleep; the Wrong shall fail, the Right prevail, with peace on Earth, goodwill to men."
http://www.whitehouse.gov/news/releases/2005/12/20051218-2.htmlRemember, bush is the one who brought this war to the earth. The irony is that the previous stanza of this poem describes reality:
And in despair I bowed my head:
"There is no peace on earth," I said,
"For hate is strong and mocks the song
Of peace on earth, good will to men."http://www.oldielyrics.com/christmas/i_heard_the_bells_on_christmas_day.htmlbush didn't even have the decency to give the author credit. Henry Wadsworth Longfellow (It's not as if he's an unknown!)
Now that bush's presidency is ending with the complete discrediting of bush himself, we can reclaim that song and hope that "Peace on Earth, Good Will to Men (and Women)" will be real rather than mockery.
