For those who don't like Presidential "Fan" Threads......a message for you:
Edited on Mon Dec-22-08 06:49 PM by FrenchieCat
As the Inauguration of the New President quickly approaches,
and after 8 years of having a President who could always be relied upon to do the wrong thing,
many of us are delighted of "finally" having an incoming President who is more likely to do the
right thing than the wrong thing-- And yes, many of us really like that notion.

Many at DU have sternly warned that we should Not all be in lockstep
as it is not healthy for our democracy,
and to them, many of us say, "Yes, we can" Not be in lockstep,
which means that some of us will at some point have more faith in the President than others think is appropriate.

In fact, there are some of us who actually like the New President as a person,
as well, we are jazzed at the idea of having a Democratic President as leader of the Free World.

Some DUers also enjoy the New First family, and some of us have much respect and even admire his wife.

So yes, there are some of us here who like many of the attributes that the new President
brings to the leadership of this country.....Some profound, and some, well.....superficial. :)

So it should be of no surprise at all that, if at times,
some of us will want to talk about a new puppy,
the clothes, and the lighter aspect of this presidency, generally.....
and yes, even laugh just a little, or kid around.

And I don't think there is any need for others to make it their job to make us feel guilty for it....
because, most of us also care about the serious issues facing this country and the various policies proposed,
and most of us plan to or have already participated in those types of discussions as well.

After 8 years, some of us are truly elated of having a choice between a fan thread, an action policy thread,
a "Look at what the dumb President did" thread, a "I hate this shit" thread, and every other type of thread that one can think of.

Please note that most, if not all of us,
quite clearly understand that the President will not be perfect,
and that he will make mistakes along the way.....
however, some of us are predisposed to being positive as opposed to being negative
until he fucks up in our individual varied views.

In otherwords, just like DU members can kick the President's ass when they choose to,
so can DUers enjoy Not kicking the President's ass when they choose not to.
In addition, at times, some of us have no problems fawning over the New President,
and we will enjoy the lighter face of the world of politics.

I have absolutely no doubt that this board is large and diverse enough that it can accomodate a broad range of views and approaches to the upcoming four years.

In fact, I doubt that anyone would really want it any other way!

Also, please note that some of us appreciate the diversity of Avatars and Signature lines found here at DU. It is diversity, after all, that makes this country interesting and great. :patriot:

47. How true=With us or Against us? Some things are black and white?
Really, uhh, are you with us, cause that sounds familiar. And why are you asking if I am with you. I will let you know if I am not.

The framing too. Supporting something is this..... Really, because I do a lot more than that and if you demonize one supporter unjustifiably then thats kinda, the opposite, of support. You now, if they get pissed, and leave. So, do I get to tell you that you are something or the other. Im mad, so I get to break the rules, right.

34. Well to each his or her own way, that is always my message
And I say enjoy enjoying! Fans make the show, no doubt about it. It is not how I am. But not because I think it is bad or silly or anything. It is just not how I am, not in politics. But I am just as glad that some are 'fans' as I am that others are cynics or endless worriers or mavens of statistics. All together we make a Party into a party. And while I'm usually in full questioning mode, there are times I will admit to wanting to speak a word or two of trivia...so I will. I just saw Michelle Obama on a rerun of Ellen and I think she was wonderful. I like her very much, including the stuff like the clothing and all. But she is really going to be one fine First Lady in every way. Of that I am certain.

And I want to note that in my world, the word 'fan' is most decidedly not a negative. Some of my best friends are fans, and also vice versa.

Peace to us all. We get to rid ourselves of Bush. We get Obama. The rest is details. Important, and deserving, but details.

Happy Holiday-o-Rama

39. tea hazards

A woman tragically lost her eye while making a cup of tea. She went to the doctor and received a cosmetic wooden eye, but she still felt very self conscious, so she only left her house to get food or to go to work.

Her friends became concerned, and finally convinced her to go to a party. At the party, many people had a fun time laughing and dancing. The woman with the wooden eye wanted to dance, but she felt too self conscious to ask any of the men.

She finally saw an attractive man with very large ears. He seemed to be very shy, which helped to put her at ease. They were both different. She worked up the courage to approach the large eared man and asked him if he would like to dance with her.

The man said, "Would eye?!"

Fuming, she yelled, "Big ears, big ears, big ears!"

Thanks for speaking up for those of us who would really like to celebrate that.

However, there are some (based on posts that I read) who are beginning to criticize threads and their originator, and are calling names. They actually believe that light hearted threads, in particular picture threads of the President and his family are not worthy of DU. These folks made their feelings known, either by calling posters "fans" in a dismissive tone, or ridiculing the threads themselves, as though, they the critics, were superior.

I'd figure that I'd let them know that they aren't superior, and that it would be best to allow freedom of thread topics.

As my thread title suggests, this thread and its message is for them.

If PE Obama invited David Duke to give the invocation at the inauguration I'll think he's suffering from temporary insanity but that will never change my views of him.

I consider myself to be a good judge of character and I have no doubt that Barack Obama is the real deal and a sure thing. I have faith in Obama and his ability to lead this country in these perilous times.

70. this is greatly appreciated, thank you

Throughout history bigots, religious zealots and even dyed in the wool racist have had an awakening, an "I'm the

asshole here" or "What I formerly believed in turns out to be bullshit" moment. PE Obama knows that, that people

can change in a 'fundamental way' (Leonard Cohen's Democracy is coming, to the USA http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OETwbVBPI1U)

Give Peace and Obama and Democracy (another) chance, I say.

71. I can be excited about Obama's victory and disappointed in his Warren decision, too.
They are not mutually exclusive.

I love my kids and am very proud of them, but when they do something that I believe violates their core beliefs, I let them hear about it. Same deal for Obama. I can love him without loving every action he takes. I can be proud of him without being proud of his misstep on Warren. He let down a significant part of our citizenry. I draw the line at selling out on key issues.

He's great, but he's not perfect.

Everyone here knows that I never hesitate to criticize anyone (left or right or even KO) whom I think is letting the Democratic Party down. But since the general election campaign started, Barack Obama has been a stellar Democrat. There is no pleasing everyone. I look at the big picture, and Obama's big picture is shaping up just fine. The second war on poverty has just begun, and when wealth disparity begins to shrink everyone will enjoy the results, because disparity contributes to depression, suicide, domestic violence, early death from chronic disease, self loathing, alcohol and drug abuse and a whole host of other medical and social ills---including racism, sexism and all the other -isms.

rather makes my point. As does your "ZOMG She didn't vote for my Lawd'nSavior in the Primary! Shun!!!!" bullshit.

This sort of hero worshiping nonsense is silly enough when it comes from sexually frustrated thirteen year old girls and is directed at boy bands. When this sort of goofy hormonal behavior is exhibited by presumably adult women and directed at politicians, it's a bit silly at best, and outright frightening at worst.

100. Yes, to each their own.

The economy is going to hell, people are suffering with poor or no health care, the homeless are being joined by more and more families, all of our citizens do not have full civil rights, the Constitution needs restoration for all of us, murderous, thieving criminals have been running the place for years, and the climate is changing ...

There is more than enough misery to go around in this county. In the world.

This is the last election and Presidential inauguration for my 88 year old dad. He hung on with all his might to see this come to pass. He said many times that after working so hard during WWII, and believing he had some small part in killing Fascism/Nazism that he refused to die in a Fascist country. And that is what we were becoming under the Bush regime. Now to have a smart, biracial, Democrat be our next President is more than he, or many of us could have hoped for.

Some people think that in hard times it's silly to go to the movies to see a comedy. That it's not "proper" in such a serious world. Well, we all have our own ways of dealing with 8 years of built up stress, and the daunting tasks we have before us. Me? I need some light hearted moments.

So hear we are. And I want to enjoy every minute of this.

102. I want to recommend this one post
three thousand times.

The picture threads are harmless fluff, something to take your mind off of all the shit in the world, if only for a few minutes. Yet because of them people are called "worshipers" and "Obamabots" and other names, insinuating that they're part of a cult and have ability to think for themselves.

Is it that bad a thing to be excited about someone you supported and worked for having won? Is it that bad to be thrilled that, despite what everyone said couldn't happen, an African-American man named Barack Hussein Obama has been elected President of the United States? This is something many thought they would never see in their lifetimes, and despite the country falling apart around us after eight years under the Occupant, it fills them with hope.

After eight years of misery and fear, I'd prefer to keep happiness and hope alive when and where I can.

and I even dare say it, the majority at DUers appear to agree that the best motto, in all fairness is "to each his own"......and that most will also agree that no one should be forced to wear a label, one way or the other. That is what true liberalism should be about.

Those who want threads about serious issues, as well who want threads about the same ass issues can have at them. You won't see me object. The only thing that I object to is when standards and rules are made for one group and not the others...especially when certain posters, who have no problem participating in as many threads as they can possibly find that focus on a perceived negatives about Obama, are the ones believing that they can make up the rules for others as they go along. In my neck of the wood, they call those types of folks; self righteous Hypocrites!

Some people voted for Obama because he wasn't Bush, some voted because his policies were better than the oppositions, some just wanted a change, and some saw him as an inspirational figure. You might not have voted for him for the same reason I voted for him, so your enthusiasm level might be different, but it is not cool to dismiss me as creepy because I like the idea that we have black president of the USA. If 1 month after the first African American president is elected people want to post pictures of his dog I am fine with it.

They call this the Honeymoon period for a reason. I guarantee you that 6 months after the inauguration things will be different.

With that said, I will be drunk at a Bar celebrating my ass off on inauguration day.

It is hard for me to believe that anyone who post on this site and has substantial amount of post did not vote for Obama. Nah, they are really just bitter from the primaries. It is fine to complain about Obama with the Warren pick or even his cabinet, but to demean posters who actually like our president is out of hand.

IT really doesn't matter. People are going to post what they want to post. If they don't like it they can hide the thread.

118. Over the last week or so my business has had me calling on scientists that work
for the government.

Now these are people who are not likely candidates for 'fan clubs' and some of them are Republicans or even would consider themselves 'conservative'. Everyone of them is counting the minutes until this anti-intellectual oppression is over. Every one of them are encouraged by the signals that they have gotten on restoring science as an honorable profession and scientific process as something independent of political pressure.

Lincoln, FDR, Teddy, JFK, all great Presidents and all had some missteps.

Obama is going to be great by virtue of his juxtaposition to Bush and I think he is going to be great in the context of all American Presidents.

Even the Warren invitation (which IMHO is either the wrong actor in a wise strategy or the wrong strategy) shows that Obama is trying to initially heal the wounds of hyper partisanship, something I think he will do without sacrificing his policy commitments.

So count me in FrenchieCat, proud to join in appretiation for the President Elect, his choices in the past and the way he conducted his campaign.

BTW Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays and Happy New Year.
