Officials Warn Poll Worker Shortage Looms

By ERICA WERNER, Associated Press Writer

WASHINGTON - A critical shortage of poll workers will develop around the nation unless younger people step in to take over for senior citizens who staff polling places now, elections officials said Monday. In Baltimore, "If they're breathing and they can walk we have to take them," said the city's election director, Barbara Jackson.

In New Mexico, the average poll worker is 70 years old, said New Mexico Secretary of State Rebecca Vigil-Giron.

While election administrators may scrape together the estimated 2 million workers needed Nov. 2, some workers will barely be up to the job, and the shortage will only get worse as staffers grow older, said witnesses at a hearing of the U.S. Election Assistance Commission. The independent federal agency distributes money and advice to states to help solve voting problems.

8. Definitely not BS
I have worked all the elections, primaries, etc since 2000. They are begging for help. We even had a sign up sheet during the May primaries for people that wanted to work it. As someone below stated, I am 40 and I am the youngest one there. We have alot of fun though, we bring alot of food and have a good time. You have alot of fun with the older folks, they have interesting insights. I take the day off with pay plus get paid for being there. Everyone should try it.

2. I just went to poll worker training and would say that is fairly accurate
I'm in my 40's and I was pretty much a Spring chicken. This is Minnesota. There could easily be a crisis coming.

4. Definitely NOT BS!
I'm a poll manager in my area. In fact, I was made manager before I was ever a worker because of the shortage. As for workers, we have to bus them from other parts of our county to staff our polls.

BE ONE! You get paid for it!

7. Boy was I wrong, I thought after the 200o Election... there would more
than enough volunteers so supervise and audit the potential corruption.
