1. I heard on one of the newscasts tonight...

...that, yes... they did. But that the weapons had been purchased before the ban took effect, so they were purchased legally.

Anyone, please confirm / correct.

2. No they did not.
The guns they had were:
TEC 9-9mm semi-suto rifle
HI POWER 9mm-carbine
12 guage double barrel shotgun
SAVAGE SPRINGFIELD 12 guage shotgun

These are NOT assault weapons.

The shotguns had sawed off barrels which made them illegal, but they do not fall into the assault weapon catagory.

3. I think the Tec 9 was banned under a different law, not the AWB.
My memory could be wrong, however?

5. The tec-9
was an assault weapon under the AWB since it is a semi-auto pistol with a detachable magazine that attaches outside the grip and a barrel shroud. After the AWB passed, Intratec took off the barrel shroud and renamed it the AB-10. The AB-10 wasn't an assault weapon under the AWB.

They had one post-ban pistol, a pistol caliber carbine, and two 12 gauge shotguns.

Also, assault weapons have never been illegal. Their manufacture for was banned for civilians from 1994 until yesterday. Owning, buying, and selling them was never illegal as long as they were manufactured before the ban.

On edit: The pistol may have been an assault weapon. I've read conflicting reports, so I couldn't say for sure. It was either a Tec-9, which was classified as an assault weapon since it is a semi-auto pistol with a detachable magazine outside the grip and a barrel shroud or an AB-10 which is a Tec-9 without a barrel shroud. Intratec, the company that manufactured the Tec-9, took off the barrel shroud and changed the name to AB-10 after the AWB went into effect. If it was a Tec-9, it was a pre-ban assault weapon. If it was an AB-10, it wasn't an assault weapon.
