please e-mail matt, tell him how lousy his journalist integrity is for using the white house spokesman as a source to refute Kelly and tell him he is a liar. Even if they were just putting.

i just found that too and put it in another post (took maybe 20 seconds), and while interesting, if it's all she's got, it's pretty weak.....

however, given that it took so little time to come up with that, i'm willing to bet there's certainly something more to be found. i'll bet he's played, for instance, in a tournament with him.

22. no, it is pretty weak
but it was also misleading of lauer to categorically deny it..... if this is all there is, weak as it may be, he should've clarified it himself, 'cause she does have a point all the same.

what i'm saying too is, don't rest on this alone. if i found that in 20 seconds, i'll bet anything there's something else there to be found in 20 minutes. so don't sit on this

and for fuck's sake, please, don't anyone take that picture of the context of the interview and the fine details, you'll slowly become the freepers we despise by pulling that shit.

12. HAHAHAHAH!!
That picture with Lauer in the middle explains a lot: short man syndrome. No wonder he looks like a Jack Russell terrier when he does one of his hostile interviews, jump up and yap, jump up and yap.

Kelly probably shouldn't have made a big deal over "playing golf with BushI" when it was only a pohto op turned into putting demonstration. It's like the right wing crowing that Clinton was a golfing buddy of Ken Lay, when it was one round of golf and over a dozen CEOs and more a photo op than a friendly game.

It's still nice to know a picture of the event, with BushI and Lauer both wielding golf clubs is out there, applying yet more egg to Lauer's face. Thanks for posting.

14. Wait a minute folks! Lauer didn't lie...
The article posted here says Lauer was doing an interview with Bush Sr. and the old fart challenged him to a putting contest. That is not what Kelley implied on the Today Show this morning...she said something like "I know you play golf with GHWB". That is more than a bit of a stretch and that is the kind of thing that really annoys me about Kelley's books.

Matt Lauer didn't do an interview this morning (or yesterday), he conducted a cross examination and he should be called on that...but the golf stuff is really lame.

Anytime you play an aspect of the game of golf- putting, chipping, driving vs. someone else you are playing golf with someone

If you merely had the opportunity to have a putting contest with Tiger Woods you played golf with Tiger Woods

18. Matt Lauer LOVES Bush Sr. almost as much as Paula Zahn does
I remember seeing him interview Bush Sr. at the opening of his presidential library and Matt was so gushy and effusive that even the old man was looking at him like he thought he was weird.

Matt conveniently forgot what he said though, because Matt asked Bush if he regretted not getting Saddam and Bush said, no, they would have gotten bogged down in a quagmire and had too many soldiers killed if they had went into Baghdad. He said, "Would you like to be the one that had to tell all those parents that their kids were dead?"

Well his criminal son found a way around that, just ignore them, with the media's help!

Lauer was emphatic "I did not play golf with him" but he never repeated his denial. It was almost an aside. Kelley would not shot off such a pointed barb without a few more arrows in her quiver.

19. My e-mail
Dear NBC Today Show,

Some one needs to send Matt Lauer back to journalist school. How do you use the words of the white house spokesman to refute facts? You know they have very little interest in facts. How do you demand with a straight face that some one prove a negative? When did Matt Lauer stop beating his wife?
The fact is that there is no proof that bush fulfilled his duties in the TANG and there should be plenty of proof. There are huge holes in his record and plenty of witnesses who say he did not show up.
I would like to see you prove that he did fulfill his duties and I would like to see you do it with solid journalistic standards. So far Kitty Kelly looks like a much better journalist than Lauer and Matt’s partisan-slip is showing.

32. And press reports . . .
New York Daily News, May 26, 2004:

Lauer & ex-Prez Bush link up on golf course

Matt Lauer put his golfing skills to good use this week. Monday, the "Today" show host played golf with former President George Bush, and later interviewed him about his son, and his 80th birthday. The two met in Kennebunkport, Maine, where Bush has a summer house. During the chat, which will air this morning (7-9 a.m.), Bush touches on reading bad stories about his son, his own legacy and plans for his June 12 birthday.

34. From a golfer - here's the lowdown

I'm really sorry folks, but if you engage someone in a putting contest you are NOT, repeat, NOT, playing golf with someone.

I drive to the golf course, and I have a 12 noon tee time with three other players. I get there early, and see another friend on the practice putting green. While waiting for an ACTUAL game of golf to begin at 12 noon, I engage in a putting contest with this friend.

I DID NOT play golf with him. To say I did is ludicrous.

If Kelley has more info, then she should bring it out. Perhaps she has actual records/eyewitnesses, etc. If so, I'll agree with her. But the attempts here on DU to make this "playing golf" thing work are just plain silly.

This is no way gets Lauer off the hook, BTW. He has shown himself to be another apologist for Bush, turning his blind eyes away from the horror that Bush is and instead "focusing" on anyone who dares question the Reich.

But ix-nay on the golf thing - OK?

44. No, not really

Actually, I've only contributed one (now 2) posts to the thread. :)

All I'm saying is he didn't "play golf" with Bush I. Was he there kissing his ass? Yep. Is he a Bush apologist? Yep.

Did he lie to Kelley? Debateable - sorry. I think it was more Lauer trying to pretend he is a journalist by attempting to remain chaste.

Now if Kelley had said "Why Matt, I know you're quite fond of Bush senior - you're both golfers, aren't you? As a matter of fact I found pictures of the two of you putting on Mr. bush's practice green. That WAS you, wasn't it Matt?" and Lauer tried to weasel out of it then we got somethin'.
