She is so dominating, takes charge, looks Presidential already, a very impressive and auspicious debut for our fantastic Secretary of State.

1. When she accepted SOS she was giving up any hope of being President
She'll be far too old by 2016.

3. No she won't
She'll be 68 in 2016. That's not that old anymore, especially for a woman. Remember that women have slightly longer lifespans. Her being 68 in 2016 would be like a man being 64.

7. Yeah? And Reagan was 69 when he took over, McCain 72 runnig for President. So why not a woman?
Remember Golda in her 70's a powerful and determined lady and Margaret Thatcher was no spring chicken. Besides, life span is longer for females than males and Hillary evidently is robust and in great health. I hope that she becomes 45th, she is a truly talented woman...and I was not her fan until these past Primaries.

27. I don't think it was age but the fact that she really had a miserable
time running this year. Go back and look at any Youtubes from the late spring - she was incredibly brittle and she either had a too bright smile or a frown. By June, she did not seem at all like she had in earlier years.

The SOS slot was a gift that will give her the opportunity to blossom into an incredibly important international figure. I think this might be more who she is than politics - which was Bill Clinton's love.

(I'm the opposite of you - I was a fan of HRC in the 1990s, but grew to see a darker side of her after 2004. )

127. Thanks - I actually hestitated posting that
because - from my posting history, it is clear that I am not a Clinton fan. I think the offer of the SOS was a gift to her - no disguise at all. I seriously doubt that she relished the thought of running in either 2012 - against as incumbent President in her own party - or in 2016.

It is extremely grueling. This year, asked about the gaffes of McCain and HRC, Kerry answered instead that running a Presidential campaign was the most physically exhausting thing he had ever done even though he has always been athletic and fit and that those things happen. In addition to the lack of sleep and physical challenge, it may be that, unlike Bill Clinton, meeting crowds of new people is more emotionally draining than revitalizing for HRC.

I hope she will be a great SOS, because we need her to be. It was hard to read how happy she is with this. The contrast between her demeanor and Susan Rice's in their respective hearings suggests that she really was conflicted with what she wanted to do. I do think this was a very clever political solution for Obama, aligning perfectly what is best for the Clintons with what is best for him. Like the best solutions everywhere - it seems win/win.

79. Reagan ran as a reformer, as something new...
...following a younger Democratic president widely perceived as a failure. I don't think she will be able to count on that sort of boost in 2016, or even in 2012. Clinton did her best to run on experience last year, rather than on change.

I'm not gonna say it couldn't happen, or that it shouldn't, but I do think this was her last chance to be president.

23. I agree. While 68-69 has not typically been "too old." I think it is now.
Things have changed. In sixteen years there won't be that many baby boomers left and I don't think we're going to go back to electing senior citizens as President. And thank God. I'm tired of old farts running the country with their tired, dated ideas. I would hope we don't elect anyone who would be 70 or older after 8 years in office, in the future.

And it's a little early for people (not you) to start speculating about that another Hillary run. Jesus it hasn't been eight months since she lost the Democratic primary, and two days since the inauguration of the current President.

129. That's absurd. FIrst of all I'm in my late 40's. Secondly,
I am not disparaging seniors in general. I just don't want them running our country any more. We need new, fresh ideas and seniors are almost always stuck in the past. IMO, our younger Presidents have been the best at reinvigorating the country -- Kennedy, Clinton, Obama.

Also, I'm not a Hillary fan so I wouldn't want her to be President if she was 50.

there will be a lot of us left. Lots of people are healthy and active through their eighties these days and even into their nineties, and they're the parents of older boomers. The youngest boomers, like Obama, will be 63 in sixteen years. Boomers are going to be around for a long time, deal with it.

78. Women don't age like men do. Remember, women on average live to be
quite a few years older than men, so a 68-year-old woman is (physically) about the same as a significantly younger man.

I don't think she'll run again, though. I wish she would, and perhaps eight years of experience as SoS might change her mind, but I think she's probably going to be more focused on her family. In eight years, she'll probably have a grandkid or two, after all.

Have you seen this?

Heckuva Job, Mark:

by Chris Bodenner

Cillizza notes:

Politics magazine is out with the results of their 2008 campaign
poll of political insiders. The choice for the best ad of the
presidential race? "3 a.m." of course -- the Hillary Clinton
commercial that was the brainchild of chief strategist Mark
Penn. The firm that conducted the Internet poll of 475
current Politics subscribers? Penn, Schoen & Berland
Associates -- the polling firm founded by (you guessed
it) Mark Penn.

Watch... there will be an astroturf "Draft Hillary 2016"
campaign by Lanny Davis by 2014. Mark Penn will do
the polling and "messaging" again, no doubt.

with that ad. We aren't supposed to play to voter fears and terrorism scares. I vote it the most shameful ad of 2008 next to their follow up with images of the Great Depression, Pearl Harbor, Bin-Laden, Katrina and various disasters. Absolutely disgusting.

It was no better than Bush showing images of 9/11 in his first 2004 re-election ad. It amazes me that anyone who calls themselves a liberal would support someone who ran that kind of Bush-esque campaign.

Good thing Hillary will be a bit too ripe to stay on the vine for 2016. There are too many decades-younger Democrats who
won't suffer being told to "wait". Obama Democrats will prefer the latter to the former, anyway, if Biden decides to forego
a run. I look forward to it.

15. You have no doubt? LOL
Barack Obama appeared on the national radar screen in 2004 to become president in 2009.
We have NO idea who will appear between now and 2016...
We have NO idea of the world events that will happen between now and 2016...
We have NO idea if she will even WANT to run in 2016...

and yet you have "no doubt" she'll be Prez #45?

Look, can we be logical here for just one moment?

Her MAIN voter block during this past primary were white people over 55. The older end of that spectrum of voters won't even BE ALIVE in 2016!!

A new, younger generation has stepped up and taken over. We have moved past the politics of the 80s and 90s and looked for something new and different. We will have 8 years of a YOUNG, VIBRANT President with a new way of operating. I find it INCREDIBLY unlikely that this new generation of American voters will want to abruptly change course 180 degrees and elect someone who came to the national stage in the 90s and will be past RETIREMENT AGE.

This year was her year. If she couldn't pull it off now, she can't pull it off in 8 years when she's in her late 60s and a new generation is leading the nation. She knows this, which is precisely why she took the Secretary of State position. If she were going to run again, she'd have stayed in the Senate, rebuilt her power base, etc.

But even as confident as I am in my analysis of the situation, I'm not so flippant or arrogant to believe that I "have no doubt" about the course of world events in 2016. ANYTHING can happen. ANYTHING.

But hey, keep the dream alive. I wonder if the Hillaryis45.com domain is available?

16. What's with this "too old" B.S.
As several people have posted there are quite a few examples of older people who ran their countries.

Hillary has more energy and stamina than most people half her age. Anyone who has spent a day following her around can attest that she outlasts most of her staff.

Those who don't support her for other reasons, fine, that's their prerogative. But the age excuse is disingenuous.

69 or 68 is not old anymore. Retirees are going back to work right now because their nest egg has been lost in the stock market. Sadly, for me, I'll be working until I die at this rate, I'm 45. I expect to work until around 75.

People not only live longer, but are active and quite vital well into their old age. My 90 year old neighbor is sharp as a tack and has a better memory than I do. Just look at these politicians' moms, they all still have their wits: Mrs. Rodham is 88, Mrs. McCain is 95 and Mrs. Biden is also in her 90s.

Long live the geezers, I expect to be one of them some day!!!!!!

120. Primarily age and health
I don't think Obama wants to put the party in the same situation that Bush/Cheney was at the end of 8 years with a VP that's too old and frail to continue leadership of the party. A sitting vice president is almost always elected when they run (Gore DID win) and I believe Obama would want to use his second term to groom a successor. Clinton or Dean would seem to be the best choices in that regard.

Biden would have absolutely no reason to retire and I'm not sure Obama would offer her the position even if he did. This reminds me of the threads saying Patterson shouldn't run for re-election so Hillary could run. Not everyone plans their careers around what the Clintons want to do.

52. Clearly, Clinton is a very capable heavy hitter
but we've got bigger fish to fry than if she's going to run in eight years (four at the absolute earliest and very unlikely). She's going to be a lot more than a token, toothless, and do nothing SoS with TONS on her plate, including restoring the State department to its rightful place and power in the Executive branch. All this does is start a stupid and needless flame war on a distant hypothetical as she is realistically out of the conversation until 2016 and working for The President.

110. shouldn't all the fanboys start a Furry Club or something?
Then y'all can tigerbeat off to Hillustrations with ginormous tails. No joke:
To the Obama fans, Hillary Clinton’s insistence on running down her dream may smack of compulsion. At what point does a desire become an all-consuming obsession?

When does a normal everyday affection for the school mascot become a tumble into a cuddle huddle?

In case you missed that last reference, you probably don’t know much about furries, a “way of life” for people who love animal characters a bit more than most do, judging by the 2001 George Gurley Vanity Fair exposé. Furries are all over the Web. If you’re new to Furry Fandom, you may want to start with this FAQ. (”What is a ‘fursuit?’).

by her mysterious detractors... I suppose that's still possible.

140. I think Caroline neutralized herself. Plus she's charisma-free and that, whether we like it or not,
plays a factor in becoming President.

130. IF she had won North Carolina, like they thought they might
She would be president today.

But she got her clock cleaned in NC and Obama got back on his feet. NC was for all the marbles, in the end.

122. A Cabinet position hasn't been a path to the WH...
since Hoover. Altough one could imagine Hillary convincing Obama to make her his running mate in 2012 (assuming a successful stint as SOS) and then she runs for president in her own right in 2016.

124. Let me tell you how it's going to be
in 2016 rumors will swirl that Hillary will run. You'll also see Mark Warner, Tim Kaine, Russ Feingold, and Evan Bayh make some noise. But they'll step aside for Clinton... no, not Hillary... CHELSEA ... who will be 37 years old then... eh... nah...

139. Well let's see...when would she run? She will be 69 in 8 years....Ageism reared its head in
Edited on Sat Jan-24-09 12:51 AM by Captain_Nemo
this primary. McCain was taken to task for his age as was Hillary (at 61).

Hillary is the only politician (at her level of being a candidate for pres) ever to have strong feminist principals. In my opinion we are long overdue for a president who puts women and children first in foreign policy. I am glad she is Sec. of State.

I think she will have to level the playing field for all women as Sec. of State. Bringing women's issues to the forefront will be helpful to us.

The double standard for women is high (people are already saying Gillebrand has no experience yet these are the same people who voted Obama - who had "no experience."

We have to take people to task for the double standard and let people know our numbers:

We are 52% of population

We are 17% of the Senate and House
20% of the Governors
0% of Executive Branch

The UN released a study this year called "Who Answers to Women?" It showed that women in countries where there is gender parity in parliaments women and children do better in those countries.
The US ranks 57 in the world in terms of Gender Parity.
