I nominate my husband - a lifelong Democrat, a brilliant strategist and he is rarely ever wrong in his judgments. Only flaw is that of being a lifelong insane die hard Cub fan.

2. Tony Coelho needs a one-way ticket to political Antarctica
It's one thing to be talking about dissatisfaction with a campaign internally and have rumors surface...it's quite another to go blab to an openly hostile press. I hope this shit never gets another job.

13. I was embarrassed that he spoke openly, too, but I do wish we
had ONE master strategist - not a bunch of them or some representing the Kennedy wing and some representing the Kerry faction but just ONE f*cking brilliant one that would call all the f*cking shots.

20. Good Call Southside
That's what Cuelho is saying, basically. Stop the infighting and get cracking on beating Bush. Mistakes were made, but they don't need to be repeated. Come together and start whacking the punks, rove and bush/cheney.:argh:

But not for our campaign. He's effectively working for Bush now.

5. Cuelho believes there's turmoil
You sure have to agree with many of his points. Bob Shrum has a losing record and the dog days of August were extremely disappointing with missed opportunities. Keeping Kerry muzzled while the Swift Liars attacked was inane. Shrum needs to leave the campaign and let our counter-attack begin before another day passes.

6. I really don't see Howard Dean as a strategist, but I gotta say
he was thinking very long term in positioning himself for this election. People oughta be asking him a whole lot more about what we should be doing.

24. Exactly- ultimately this is about whether or not the Dems
Edited on Wed Sep-15-04 01:52 AM by BullGooseLoony
have the courage to do what they need to do. It's not about Dean. It's about the Democratic Party as a whole, and who constitutes it.

No matter- if they don't, they'll "die out" and someone else, hopefully with the right approach to things, will take over.

Of course, I'll probably be in Canada or Europe by then, and, hell, the U.S. might not even exist anymore.

12. Karl Rove is overrated.
Edited on Tue Sep-14-04 10:39 PM by BillyBunter
What gives him his power is access to an entire attack machine, a public which is becoming more conservative, so he is always operating with a wind at his back, and the fact that Republicans are more disciplined than Democrats are.

What Democrats need is a small but dedicated group of people who are devoted, year round, to making sure a consistent, clear Democratic voice is out there, and that Democrats are focusing on the big picture. Rove gets to do this as a matter of course from his access to the Bush family machine; the only Democrat I can think of who is similarly situated is Bill Clinton, and he's had his hands full with book writing and speech making and his wife, plus I don't think he's tempermentally suited to being a strategist.

We need a Karl Rove-like person or group, but this building Rove up to being some kind of genius, or some kind of Rasputin, is silly and counterproductive.

23. BINGO!
Rove is not the genius he's made out to be. It's Murdock and Roger Ailes who laid the groundwork.

1. First, buy the media.
2. Secure NFL for FOX.
3. Get all the players in place
4. Set up an election fraud and declare a winner

EVERYTHING ELSE stems from the above.

News is no longer news, but a commercial enterprise.
Ratings matter more than accuracy
Campaigns are reduced to repetitive sound-bytes and excessive spin
Americans are stupid, stupid people who believe anything they see on TV or hear on the radio.

18. I hate to be the bearer of bad news...
Edited on Tue Sep-14-04 10:46 PM by grasswire
...but in the year 2000, a friend of mine in Washington D.C. who has an incomparable track record as an investigative journalist (nine books, some NYT bestsellers) and is a name most of you would know and revere for a particular task tried to set up an opposition research group to go after the Republican attack machine.

He had his plans, he needed funding. He could not get funding from Dems who have money. The need was recognized, but nobody wanted to be known to be funding oppo research.

Then another entity tried to develop such a project. He was a bigwig in House staff. He was sent to talk to Hollywood rainmakers. Again, everyone was scared. No money came.

Rob Reiner even talked of developing this kind of entity. He backed off about the time that Rove went out to talk to Hollywood.

If ONLY someone had been bold enough to fund oppo research four or five years ago, we'd be in the catbird seat now.

19. Absolutely not
we don't need to stoop to their level. Once we become them we have defeated ourselves.

What we need is a brilliant strategist who can embrace and further progressive values, not compromise and destroy them.
