Obama will "listen", then decide what HE believes is best for this country.
Just so the progressives and Liberals here do not get all pressurized and have their heads explode, accusing Obama of being a DLCer or a DINO understand that the best predictor of future behavior is past behavior. Obama is not going to carry the Liberal Left's water and he is not a trained cat that will at the crack of a whip jump through all the right hoops that we like on the Left. At any given time Democrats are going to be mad and disappointed with Obama, screaming that he is not doing what they think he should do because after to listening to and considering different points of he will then do what he thinks is the best thing to do for this country. The buck stops with him and we don't have a referendum on everything that needs to be decided.

I point to the latest Frontline: Deams of Obama which everyone should watch if they have already not seen it because it gives some great insights into how Obama's mind works. http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/pages/frontline/dreamsofobama/ Online, part Three: Honing His Political Skills is very informative, particularly the first six minutes of part 3, but the entire show is good. The first 6 minutes of part 3 describe how he became head of the Harvard Law Review. He finally won the job with the support of the conservatives. Among the majority Liberals at Harvard it was thought that Obama, as the first African-American head of the Harvard Law Review would use his position to further "the cause" but were disappointed when he only appointed 1 AA to be a top editor, but appointed 3 members of the conservative Federalist Society to be top editors. Brad Berenson, a member of the Federalist Society, said that at the Review Obama took 10 times more grief from the left than he did from the right.

This Frontline tells about how Obama is very adept at walking the line between two different sides, two different worlds. He is a pragmatist who has the ability to see and consider more than one point of view and to choose the one he believes is best even if it does not fit neatly into what other Democrats believe he should do. This is his strength and this is why he will get things done rather than be all knotted up in continual partisan struggles that bring things to a standstill. This is why he has a good chance of getting his economic stimulus plan moved forward that will help people to keep their jobs or get new ones, that will help people to keep their homes. This is why he will have at least a chance of getting meaningful healthcare reform. He will compromise and come our with 3/4 of a loaf rather than none at all and then work from there.

So Progressive Liberals and those on the Left--be prepared to be both delighted with Obama and what he does as well as being pissed and jumping up and down about what he does, but don't throw the baby out with the bathwater. Don't demand of him to have all things your way, nor to be your personal revenge tool to spend all of his political capital in bringing Bushco to justice that draws the partisan lines to battle and all else comes to a halt. There are millions of Americans who desperately need help and although man does not live by bread alone, without bread he does not live. Obama is faced with tough choices and may have to leave ones he would prefer to pursue, but in the end he will do what he thinks is right for this country and for all Americans.

Don't look now, but I think in Barack Obama we may very well have one of the greatest presidents, if not THE greatest president that most of us will see in our lifetimes. These are going to be exciting and trying times and I am proud to have a man who has such class and grace and intelligence as Barack Obama as my president.

1. He is well on his way to being the best president I've seen in my lifetime.
Hard headed pragmatism over ideology is EXACTLY what we need.

3. Dreams of Obama
I had one. We were spooning.

Oh, oh, I digress. Sorry, Michelle, you lucky dog.

Yes, I knew that if he could balance the egos of the students writing law reviews for one of the most prestigious law schools on the planet, that he could probably take on heads of state with ease. I don't expect to agree with him on all accounts. An intelligent pragmatist is exactly what we need. ALL points of view need to be considered. The future has a point of view. So does the status quo. I think this will be the best presidency of my life.

What a glorious three days!

4. The precinct coordinator I worked with during the election interned for Obama -
She was from Chicago and worked for him when he was a state Senator and then interned for him when he went to DC.

She told me that Obama had a routine when it was time to vote on something - he would gather some of his staff and some people from the other side into his office and they would debate the pros and cons of what he was going to vote on.

He would lay on the sofa in his office and toss and twirl a basketball while everyone discussed the issues. He would listen to all sides before he made his decision.

She told me that she did not always agree with how Obama voted on certain things but she was always confident that he put much thought into his decisions and he had very good reasons for doing what he did.

I really liked volunteering for her because she made me feel very comfortable about Obama. She worked hard to get him elected and she definitely helped turn NC blue.

7. Hear, hear
I couldn't agree more.

Wednesday, meeting with staff to lay the foundations for his ethical expectations of them. Thursday, foreign policy and welcoming the media. Today, bringing Congressional leaders of both parties together to talk about how they are going to move the stimulus through. And always so positive, disciplined, and walking the talk AND the walk.

I thought I would cry during the Inauguration. I didn't -- must have been too awed or in shock (and perhaps "cried out" since 11/4 - tears of joy and amazement over last 2 months - dying for him to begin). Instead, what did make me cry was listening to Obama yesterday telling his staff how proud he is of them, and how appreciative he is of their service. Also, his introduction of Hillary at State. No wonder his children are so marvelous. Where was he when I was starting out in my career 25 years ago?

It's been fun to be along as gets used to his new trappings - like Barack's excellent adventure, except Barack is this amazing, heroic figure. Somehow he gets us to relate to him as if we know him personally. (I hear you about the spooning! :) )

Let it be remembered that when America was at a crossroads of cynicism and greed versus maturity and compassion, we chose the right path. Remarkable, and I am so proud and humbled to be alive at this time. I am trying to become someone he would be proud of, as well.

10. So far I think Obama has done a fine job. However, it is a progressive agenda which will make Obama
a great president, not some K Street agenda. It was all the breakthroughs that progressives have fought for many decades that created the opportunities and opened the doors through which Obama has walked through to become president.

11. Kicking this. Thoughtful OP and good thoughts in the thread so far. I really trust this guy...
... and I am far past the age when I think any one person is going to be The Answer. I know that I will not always agree with him, but I also know that he has a depth of experience and thought that he will bring to any situation.

13. Again, I highly recommend this Frontline show "Dreams of Obama":
http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/pages/frontline/dreamsofobama

This particular Frontline episode might have been easy to miss because where I live it was aired on inauguration night and again on Thursday night at the same time as Letterman. It gives some good insights into the mind of Obama and how it works. He does not fit neatly into one of our predetermined boxes of what a politician is. If he serves two terms he will only be 55 at the end of his presidency and I sure hope he does not go into semi-retirement then. Wouldn't he be a great one to end up on the Supreme Court like Taft?
