Some people are really crazy and cannot be reached
Here's an example letter to the editor in my local newspaper

http://journalstar.com/articles/2009/01/23/opinion/columns/doc4970d369be398214306780.txt

snip

First, thank you, Mr. President, for your steadfast and successful defense of the United States following the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. In part because of your proactive approach, taking the fight to the terrorists, there has been no subsequent attack within the United States. The terrorists have been reduced to engaging our military in foreign lands rather than in our streets.

President-elect Barack Obama begins his administration with a victory in Iraq and a democratic ally rather than a member of the axis of evil. In addition, Obama confronts no nuclear threat in Libya and inherits an Afghanistan with problems but absent government-sponsored al-Qaida. When Obama eventually confronts Iran, the intact remaining member of the axis of evil, his chances for nonviolent success will be enhanced by the inherent threat of a U.S. Army in Iraq and a NATO presence in Afghanistan.

Obama also inherits the criticized but thus far at least partially successful six-party talks with North Korea that have led the third member of the axis of evil to slow or halt nuclear weapons development. Hopefully God will grant Obama the wisdom needed to capitalize upon the opportunities passed to him.

Second, thank you, Mr. President, for economic policies that have resulted in eight years of relative prosperity marked by consistently low unemployment and consistently low inflation. Except very recently, unemployment has been below the level for all the presidencies between Nixon and Clinton, and inflation has consistently remained at the low level of the Clinton years. The dreaded Bush tax cuts (which were not just for the wealthy) helped me personally, and more importantly the country, by limiting the recession triggered by the Sept. 11 attacks.

1. I get those types of letters in the local fishwrap all the time ...
I'm in the Southern California Bible Belt, here in Murrieta/Temecula, CA.

It never fails to boggle the mind.

That's a crazy one you posted!

4. Coorelation does not equal causality...
"In part because of your proactive approach, taking the fight to the terrorists, there has been no subsequent attack within the United States."

How does she know WHY there hasn't been an attack? Psychologists have to understand statistics. Sheesh!!

7. Are you sure this guy's a doctor, and not a pharmacist? A pharmacist would have
access to the staggering variety and quantity of narcotics necessary to produce delusions of such intensity and power.

8. I think it's years of mental instability. He's probably not even a
doctor.

Look at his description at the end.

Bill Stone is a psychologist who after more than 35 years of helping individuals has come to recognize public policy can seldom be based on individual needs

is a dehumanizing word, stigma, stop it. Call him an asshole,call him a reactionary,call him dangerously mean..but please don't use crazy, when you mean something else that is not an accurate word it is a slur.I'm tired of it.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
What I always like to say in these situations when someone asks “Well then, what am I supposed to say instead?” is: “Why do you have to say it at all?” Is the concept of the Scary Mean Crazy Person so invaluable that we HAVE to be able to invoke it?
Why do you think that Crazy has to be able to be used in that way? As a slur?
Would you rather be able to use that language or would you rather that every person, of all abilities, is able to lead a good life and be treated with respect?
Would you rather, then contribute to the system that is oppressing them this very minute?
11. Why do you insist on using slurs
If he was black you wouldn't call him the n word would you?
So why slur against people that suffer a hell of a lot of PAIN and equate them with this reactionary asshole?
Are you aware mental illness/psych injuries actually are painful to have.So painful it can lead a person to suicide?
So why use that stigma, perpetuate it,to discribe an asshole.
Are you THAT cold twords others in pain,that you will throw around a word of oppression that has been used over and over again to dehumanize us??
If you are that cold than you are no better than the asshole that offended you.
12. Your slurring me.
I am offended by your slur. You realized how painful to be slurred? It can be painful, bringing back memories of spanking Chuck Norris twice a night. Or that cool relief after throwing up.
13. The only conclusion I have ever been able to come up with when I see
things like this, written by someone who is obviously fairly well educated, (in a formulative sense, anyway), that is so blatantly oblivious to factual data or documentation and falls to opinion (his own, I guess) that is nearly impossible to give credence to (except with more opinion or spin-doctoring)...
... and that is racism. I may get a lot of flack for saying this, or called out for being reactionary or "playing the race card" (I'm not black, which I don't think is relevant - I'm also not entirely white, so I have no ethnic stake in this specific observation either way).
But I am left blindsided when those might be viewed as influential or esteemed is completely blinded by Obama as a man, a leader or the value of his accomplishments and excellence, I don't know what else is so blinding - so effectively - except racism (or sexism, or gayism or whatever "ism" might be dismissed by his/her critic).
He's not crazy (I'm guessing) in the formal sense, but I think he's probably racist. That said, I personally think racism - or other isms based on hate - are a form of insanity... it just doesn't have a diagnostic code in the ol' PDR or something.
95% or more are of the "What on earth is wrong with you?" variety. Great fun to read.
A sample:
Mark wrote on January 18, 2009 12:06 pm:
My thank-yous for President Bush:
-Thank you for telling the person who handed you a detailed memo entitled "Bin Laden determined to strike in U.S." that he has "covered his a** now" and then doing absolutely nothing about it.
-Thank you for torturing people. I had always been under the assumption that torture was only a tactic used by the worst of the worst nations and that we were above that sort of thing. Thank you for setting me straight on that.
-Thank you for your "actions" in the aftermath of Katrina. A lesser President probably would have done something to help the people of New Oreleans but we all know that "those people" don't have a lot of money and aren't worth the effort.
-Thank you for firing qualified attorneys in the Justice Department because they didn't walk lock-step with you.
-Thank you for invading Iraq despite the fact that they had nothing to do with 9/11, then continuing to change your answer as to why it was necessary to invade in the first place. In the same vein, thank you for completly forgetting about Afghanistan and outsourcing our efforts to catch Bin Laden. After all, why would our soldiers want to risk their lives to capture or kill the mastermind of 9/11 when they could be in Iraq--a country who had nothing to do with 9/11?
-Thank you for the openness and transparency seen in your administration.
-Thank you for commuting the sentence of your buddy Scotter Libby despite the fact that he and your V.P. outed an undercover CIA agent, and arguably treasonous act.
-Thank you for being on vacation over 1/4 of your time in office. God knows what more you could have done.
