I'll give it a shot:

swarming the gates of power
without one arrest

I dreamed about love
except when I woke up it
wasn't just a dream.

***

Sitting in a crowd
the theater is all full
I can't see the screen

(I saw it in y towns movie theater, standing room only)

***

America is
Just an opportunity
we have to take it.

(I kinda like that!)

The reasons why it matters
Sasha, Malia

Brilliant news week ends.
Just one headline left to see:
"Limbaugh's Head Explodes"

What is this wonder?
Oh! I remember it now!
It's untroubled sleep.

11. okay...
It was a good day,
even though the poetry
reading rather sucked.

There were some iambs,
but it scanned better as prose,
all things considered.

Raging against George Bush,
Collapsed at Obama's feet
At last, I can breathe...

17. It's more than 5-7-5. The three lines are not meant to be just one long prose line,
that reveals a fully developed thought, that flows from line to line. It is more a matter of putting two well-observed, captivating images together--unrelated images, or contrasting images--and aiming for a third, resolving image, or commentary image, or even a yet more puzzling image, for line 3. The goal is not to TELL the reader something (an abstract message), but rather to draw the reader into the images, to create his/her own connections. For instance:

Michelle's wind-blown hair.
I can't watch the bomb footage.
Amber waves of grain.

(This haiku references a particular photo of Michelle's hair blowing in the wind, as Michelle and Barack walked down steps to the inaugural platform, my personal, emotional reaction to the news footage from Palestine, and a phrase from "America, the Beautiful" about the loveliness of our own land, the fertility of the earth, and our once-fabled prosperity. Draw your own conclusion: some beauty in this week, for sure, and a bit of wild Nature (wind-blown hair), but portents of trouble, and an agonizing effort to come back to beauty, to think of ourselves and our land as beautiful, when we are paying for the bombs, and supporting the bombing, and now face hardship--perhaps great hardship--because of all the bombs we make and peddle around the world, because of our failures as citizens. It is not a great haiku. But it illustrates sort of what a haiku is supposed to do: Explode with meaning!)

Washington DC.
Two million folks--no crime!
They wheel Cheney out.

(Maybe a little too messagey. Try again...)

Washington DC.
Night sky at home blazing stars.
I burn sage. No cat!

(Damned if I know what it means. Haikus are sometimes very enigmatic. But it's provocative, don't you think? What happened to my cat? What does that have to do with Washington DC? And where am I, to be blessed with a clear, star-studded night sky? Two macrocosms. One microcosm: cleansing; absence, loss.)

(One more try...)

Steve Jobs sick--oh no!
Obama sworn in two times!
Alabama '65.

(Nope, I'm not going to even try to explain it!)
