In talking to Bush supporters around town I get the impression they are just as disgusted as I am about the mess in Iraq, but they have two camps on what to do about it. I am pleasantly surprised to learn that many local Shrub supporters are now openly saying, "end it, bring the boys home, fuck Iraq". But then there is the other camp:
A good many war supporters have a plan B for what to do next in Iraq -- "nuke em". Or as one told me, "turn the sand to glass". I shudder when I hear that kind of talk, and flash back to the Vietnam era, because the same line of reasoning kept the war going for years.
War supporters who know the war isn't going well put great stock in escalating the violence to such high levels the enemy will simply be destroyed, vaporized, made to disappear. They hold on to that image and continue to believe the war can be won by increased firepower.
Here is what you and I know, that they do not know, or will not admit to themselves: We aren't going to "nuke em". We are not going to escalate the violence to the point of killing every would be terrorist. That is not possible, not practical, and, of course, not ethical. It is immoral.
I raise all this in the hopes some enterprising journalist will ask both Bush and Kerry what there plan B is for further escalating the use of full American firepower in Iraq. It would be helpful to get both men on the record that "nuking our way out of Iraq, is not a viable exit strategy".
Just a thought.
