Wow. Writer at Buzzflash thinks Rove leaked "forged" documents
i'll post first four graphs here, but this entire thing is definitely worth a read folks.

National Guarding Bush: Did Karl Rove Plan Leak of Alleged Forged Documents to 60 Minutes?
A BUZZFLASH GUEST CONTRIBUTION
by Mike Burke

The big buzz on the Internet and in the papers over the past 24 hours has been the fallout from the "60 Minutes" story this week on President Bush's service (or lack thereof) in the Texas National Guard. In particular, scores of blogs and Matt Drudge have honed in on accusations that documents obtained by "60 Minutes" bolstering the case that Bush did not fulfill his duties were faked. The right wing FreeRepublic website posted this theory:

"Every single one of the memos to file regarding Bush's failure to attend a physical and meet other requirements is in a proportionally spaced font, probably Palatine or Times New Roman. In 1972 people used typewriters for this sort of thing (especially in the military), and typewriters used mono-spaced fonts."

The post went on to say, "hese documents are forgeries, run through a copier for 15 generations to make them look old. This should be pursued aggressively."

It should.

The dominant thinking seems to be that if the documents were forged, they were leaked in an effort to harm Bush. But it is worth considering another possibility: the Bush team itself may have "leaked" the forged documents. The whole affair seems to bear what is known as "The Mark of Rove," as in Karl Rove, senior advisor to President Bush; Karl Rove the grand wizard of dirty tricks.

1. Then why won't CBS
admit anything?

Maybe they are doing a secret investigation of the source. Maybe they'll out the source in their statement today.

But I bet you a dollar to a dime, the media ain't gonna let this go. No matter what CBS says today, the very least the talk will be "Did they handle it correctly?" The others smell blood.

And it will eat up another week (at least) of coverage. Never mind anything of the PAST 4 YEARS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

2. I think this is a Rove thing too
Can not put it past him. This is the way the Rove machine operates.\

Attacking with False statements
Whisper Campaigns
using others to do his dirty work.

Rove is synomymous with weasel. This could be a Rove job.

3. And the same thing didn't occur to Dan Rather? Not bloody likely
Edited on Wed Sep-15-04 11:14 AM by rocknation
Rather went with the story, and is still standing by it, because he can prove that either the documents are real, or that they're part of a setup. He's been way too mellow about all this--he has a few more veils to drop!

5. It is conceivable that Rather screwed up.
From various comments from CBS insiders (published in various stories in the last few days), it seems that they may not have checked in out enough. I doubt that CBS is stringing this along -- they're taking it on the chin, and their credibility looks like it is suffering. If they have the proof, they're making a bit mistake to sit on it. Most likely, any "proof" will be disputed, and all dragging it out does is cause people to doubt CBS's veracity.

None of this is to say that the charges are false. The secretary says they're true, just that documents were faked.

4. Yes, but...
Yeah, that was my first response as well - that Rove was behind it if it was a forgery. A forgery would neutralize the other Texas Guard charges, would be a preemptive strike against Kitty Kelley's deathbomb book ("It's all just political enemies making shit up!"), and would also discredit CBS as payback for publishing the initial Abu Ghraib pictures. Discrediting the media in general has been a Republican strategy for years, so this would be a particularly nice touch. The controversy is also distracting from other key issues, and time is getting short for Kerry to gain traction.

The fact that the Killian's secretary says they're forged, but contained accurate information and reflected what Bush's commanding officer thought of him, suggests that it wasn't a Republican/Rove forgery. I don't think even Rove could predict how people would react to all this attention on something that reflects badly on your boss that ultimately is proven to be true.

6. Keith Olbermann has been bringing up the possibility
on his last couple shows. It takes the attention away from the 1000 deaths, and he may have mentioned it would distract from the Kitty Kelly book also.

It does fit Rove's modus operandi.
