1. I think you're onto something.

These are explanations are too byzantine, and mostly ridiculous. I worked in Chicago's City Hall for a few years and there were conspiracy theories all the time. The truth was usually the simplest explanation.

I heard a rumor (read it here?) that CBS got the memos from someone who said he was present when Bush's records were being scrubbed when he was gov of Texas.

It doesn't make any sense that he would have typed new ones, instead of making copies, but maybe he couldn't make copies. Maybe he was only in a position to memorize them, or take handwritten notes because he was being watched and then he recreated them later. If so, he did lie about them but it appears clearer now that the content was/is correct.
