From "How to govern a center right country" to now (once it became obvious we weren't a center right country) "we are all socialists now."

Have they moved right or have they always been this reactionary?

1. The new editor (as of April of 2008) is a dipshit, far as I am concerned!

It’s Not Easy Bein’ Blue
America remains a center-right nation—a fact that a President Obama would forget at his peril.

By Jon Meacham | NEWSWEEK
Published Oct 18, 2008

It was a grand evening. On Thursday, Dec. 5, 1985, at the Plaza Hotel, William F. Buckley Jr. rose to toast the president of the United States on the occasion of the 30th anniversary of National Review. Charlton Heston was the master of ceremonies; the audience included William J. Casey, Nancy Kissinger, Roy Cohn and Tom Selleck. Thirteen months earlier Ronald Reagan had been re-elected, carrying every state in the Union except Walter Mondale's Minnesota. "As an individual you incarnate American ideals at many levels," Buckley said to the president. "As the final responsible authority, in any hour of great challenge, we depend on you." Buckley was 19 when America dropped the bomb at Hiroshima, he said, and he had just turned 60. "During the interval I have lived a free man in a free and sovereign country, and this only because we have husbanded a nuclear deterrent, and made clear our disposition to use it if necessary. I pray that my son, when he is 60, and your son, when he is 60 … will live in a world from which the great ugliness that has scarred our century has passed. Enjoying their freedoms, they will be grateful that, at the threatened nightfall, the blood of their fathers ran strong."

You can almost hear the trumpets. The scene from the Plaza, in a ballroom resplendent with flowers, full of guests cheered by wine, is glittery, and emblematic of the days of the Age of Reagan. Buckley's cold-war remarks were primal, reflecting the ancient human urge to protect one's own from gathering dangers.

4. What is wrong with that man?
We won everything but dog catcher. Maybe we won that, too. How in h*ll does that make it "not easy to be blue"? Then, he goes back to something that happened 24 years ago. :wow:

2. No, and several of their writers and editors that I see on MSNBC are not. Of
course it's owned by wingnuts like most of our media.

7. link to editor being a repuke?
I don't know if he is or isn't. I disagree with some of what he writes. And I agree with some.

He certainly upset the repukes with this cover story:

5. The elite believe we're center right
So everything they write comes from that perspective.

20. Well, we are center-right.
The media elite helped make us so, pulling us as far to the right as they can.

8. yeah, I don't like the editor
He's just...annoying. He did write an article about how Sarah Palin sucks once (well, you know), but I felt like he was trying extra hard to say flattering things to McCain in the article to compensate or something. Oh well.

9. Newsweek has turned into a "People-like" magazine. It's all about celebrities, not issues.
Check it out: little blurbs about "people" all through the piece of junk.

I mean for gods' sake, talk about inflammatory buzzwords! "Vietnam"-- "Socialism"? What exactly is their agenda?

(To do them justice, Fareed Zakaria and a couple of other essayists are a good read.)

13. The "right" is only about 30%..(or less), and has been that for AGES,
but within that 30% (population-wise), is the Cream of the Crop Rich Folks.. Those are the people who control the media, the money, and until recently, the government.

These folks did a thorough beat-down of anything even remotely resembling "public policy".. They had (have) a vested interest in keeping any and ALL money OUT of the public coffers, and at the ready for them to pluck off the money-tree...for themselves and their progeny.

In a generation and a half, they managed to sway public opinion regarding policies that benefit the whole...to a belief that everyone "can be rich", if only they embrace the singular, rather than the plural...and it worked..

people who protested and worked for policies that benefited all or most of us, were shunted to the side, and labeled as kooks, tree-huggers, no-good-niks, socialists, hippies, commies, etc..any label would do.

In order to achieve this, media did the heavy lifting, and it worked.. Policticians who had, until then, believed in the "macro", suddenly moved right, and settled into the center-right, so they could get/stay elected...because media singled them out,and tied them to these out-of-favor groups, and then shone a spotlight on them if they resisted.

The flipside for the pols was this..play the game, and you'll have ample money top stay in office..resist, and we'll find someone else....They traded principle, for principal... The few who were already wealthy, and entrenched (Kennedy comes to mind), could hold their liberal stances, but many (most?) younger ones, fell in line..(Clinton comes to mind)..

Could Clinton have won in '92, without all the coverage he got as a "fresh-face..a new kind of democrat..and all the favorable press?..

If enough media-types SAY something, and say it often enough, it BECOMES a public perception..

The true measure of the "right-centrist" strength, is the poll numbers that opposed Clinton throughout his impeachment...30%..the "dirty-thirty"..

FDR scared the HELL out of the "business-class", because his policies worked, and they actually had possibilities of creating an egalitarian society.. Powerful people fear that kind of society, almost as much as they fear their own demise.

15. Actually if you get past the cover and read the article
it isn't bad at all. I read Newsweek cover to cover every week. I don't care for the sensational covers but the articles are almost always thought-provoking.

18. I canceled my subscription when they put KKKarl Rove on the payroll.
I send them emails every once in a while asking them if they got rid of Rove yet so I could re-subscribe. I liked getting it, but I refuse until they rid themselves of that criminal.
