Tonight our Dem group was BOOED in a Penna. parade in fascist-land!
A small but committed group of Democrats tonight marched through Denver, PA, for that small, VERY CONSERVATIVE town's annual Fair Parade. We had a great float -- with a big "John Kerry, the Real Deal" sign and a big statue of Uncle Sam.

Denver is in Lancaster County, PA, which is ULTRA-ULTRA CONSERVATIVE. So, we had our work cut out for us. As we marched or rode along, the Bushie crowd just booed and booed and booed at us ... lot of "four more years" and "GET OUT OF HERE!!!" The little Bushie kids screamed at us till they were hoarse.

There were quite a few Kerry supporters yelling their support, but most of the crowd just plain HATED US.

And I was SO PROUD to be a DEMOCRAT. So proud, I was just smiling from ear to ear as people hurled insults. We just smiled and waved and were completely friendly to the hostile crowd. Probably put them off balance. The people who cheered for us were so brave to do that in front of their fascist neighbors. A great night to stand up for one's party!

18. Yeah
I had a coworker from Lancaster and she was super stuck up and nasty for NO reason. I was ostentatiously nice in return and invited her to a house party my friends were throwing because being nice just made her MORE ANGRY.

Then I found out what that part of PA was like..

2. That is so great
I think when one campaigns in conservative areas, it gives closet Kerry supporters a little more backbone. I'll bet a few of the spouses of those who booed you will now vote for Kerry.

6. I definitely felt the people who cheered us ...
... had been just WAITING to have a chance to yell "YEA KERRY!" in their own town. We yelled "thank you" to them (for being so brave in front of the booing people on the next porch or the next set of lawn chairs) and some yelled "thank you for being here" back at us!

I do think our presence helped them know they are not alone.

10. I met a couple at the pub a couple weeks ago
Husband a repub. Wife a dem. I snuck her a button and bumper sticker. I keep a supply in the RealDealMobile for just such an occasion.

My suburban church surprised me a while back when I got the guts up to wear the Kerry button in church on Sunday. 10 "good man" comments to one "I don't know about that guy."

I assumed suburbanite churchgoers in Bush country would be Bushies. Nope. But then we're the "liberal" Lutherans who get official frowns from our fellow Lutherans.

Gave out a few buttons and yard signs there too. One of them, a lawyer, calls out "Greetings, fellow traveler" whenever he sees me.

4. Sounds weird to be calling those people "conservative"
Republicans are now the radicals -- we've come full circle.

5. Stay IN THEIR FACE
Did you get any video?

It is scary seeing mini-Chimpy fans.... ah, the power of negative advertising. Even the kids get sucked into the hateful vortex of lies.

9. No ... we didn't get video ... but our group is always armed with still
cameras, in case any Repugs get rough. We talk about this before each big event we do here in conservative-land. It's nice to know we can get photo-evidence if someone starts something.

8. Today, our 90+ year old staffer and her 80+ year old friend were
threatened by a 65-70 year old man who came into our Democratic Headquarters. He was screaming about the Swift Boat Liars statements being true, they told him to leave, he tore up some bumper stickers and said something like "this is what I think of these"! He also shouted some obscenities at the two ladies.

What a guy! A classic right-wing, fundamentalist Republican from our area.

Anyway, he misunderestimated our two staffers and they didn't back down. The store owner next door challenged the man but he got away.

I think we're making them pretty nervous here in East Tennessee, and I love it! However, we're going to be providing a more presence so that our staffers aren't so vulnerable.

11. What is WRONG with people? They're turning into cavemen!
A couple of us Baby Boomers on the float were talking about how, if we had booed someone -- anyone -- marching in a parade when we were kids, we'd have been taken home, jiffy quick! Or at least given a really stern lecture about our behavior.

Now, a whole town can do it with impunity. And little kids are allowed to act like wild Hitler Youth -- screaming at people marching a few feet away from them. Sheesh! Uncivilized!

12. Thank you.

Your description of the screaming children reminded me of Schindler's list, where the little boy yelled 'Go home Jews"...

It's scary out there, but we will win.
