Important Presidential History was made yesterday, but it may not be what you think!
Edited on Fri Mar-20-09 04:30 AM by FrenchieCat
One would think that I was talking about the fact that President Barack Obama became the first sitting President ever to appear on a late night talk program. Certainly, it was historical as a first, but it wasn't of important global note. I'd call it an enjoyable appearance, and for the exception of a blip, that if one had options, one could have done without, I'd say A+. That said, it was an extremely effective manner for our President to converse with the people of America in a relaxed, casual, but informative way during a time of national stress.

But the Real important historical news is that President Barack Obama became the first American President to ever tape a "Happy Iranian New Year" video message addressed to the People of Iran. In it, he clearly communicated a message of respect, and that of an open hand. Amazingly, our 21st Century President is using 21t Century tools to attempt to make our world a more peaceful one.

Now, that is the real historical news for the book on Firsts!

But perhaps more interestingly,
This overabundance of history making moves also serves
as a great test for our American Corporate media.

Which story will they highlight as having made history?
Will they concentrate solely on the unfortunate "blip",
bring in the rest of the successful interview on the Tonight Show (that was quite substantive),
or will they focus on the much more important and groundbreaking history making good-will gesture that our New President has made to a country that the last President called out as one in an Axis of Evil?

Will the media attempt to prove that they are not the hacks that so many of us have come to know them as, or will they, once again, show us that they are the media whores that we have long thought them to be?

Now see, for us, this could prove quite interesting as this becomes the perfect opportunity to see the true face of the American Corporate media.

One option chosen, and it only confirms that they basically are parrots for Right Wing talking points.

The other option chosen, and they may still have some producers in their ranks
who actually care about the news and about history.

Which will they choose? (since we know they can only cover one subject at a time)

1. I have a really good feeling about so much right now.
Like our president KNOWS the GOP power of the press and its spin and that he's working around it to empower us all.

2. I agree. The fact that he discussed further the question that he took at his town hall
about credit card interest, and again responded to that question on the Leno show.
There were some here who felt he hadn't answered that question fully,
and it is as though he heard whomever it was (it was at DU...LOL!)

In anycase, anyone paying attention, will soon know why we voted him into the White House,
over any other.

3. I was pleasantly surprised to read about that
All the little Repubs heads are going to pop of course, but Obama knew that and did it anyway. That's pretty gutsy and I applaud the man for doing it.

Good stuff Mr. President. Really good stuff.

5. Yep
Here the wingnuts have been trying to portray him as some kind of stealth terrorist Manchurian candidate, and he just brushes them aside and goes and does that. Awesome.

He may convince me he's really as good as you think he is yet Frenchie. I've been burned too many times not to be cautious, but really, this move was impressive. Can you imagine Clinton doing that? I don't think so. He was a lot more cautious, often to his detriment.

16. With the hand gesture to Leno, more an effort to say how we encourage, applaud the S.O. performances
That didn't turn out well. Then WaPo claiming it overshadowed an otherwise perfect performance. Gotcha media will always look for that.

Yet, Obama supports disabilities groups in programs and dollars, as well as words that highlight need to support and include for our future. I do understand the hurt felt by all with challenge in the family unit like that.

as well as throughout, on the campaign trail. He's just keeping his promises.
But yeah....if one wants peace, this helps.

15. Hate to say this- and I'll get shit for it no doubt
But Barack Obama is Jackie Robinson in this role, and in some respects, the American corporate media's going to react that way. That's to be expected in 2009, just as it was in 1947.

17. React in what way? you mean....
Highlight the barely there, and ignore or play down the elephant in the room?

Possibly, but it really demonstrates to even those who normally wouldn't see it,
that the importance of what is news is fabricated by producers every single morning,
and bears no relation to the reality as to the worthiness impact any of it has!

Edited on Fri Mar-20-09 12:03 PM by depakid
I know I do- but they're the way they are- and they're not about to change (thanks in no small part to Democrats),

So what to do?

Learn from mistakes and BE a kick ass president (chief executive)- knowing all eyes are on you-

Easier said than done, no doubt. But then again, Jackie Robinson couldn't choose nor manage his teamates.

Edited on Fri Mar-20-09 12:49 PM by depakid
That's a longer term deal where people actually have some time to gather evidence, listen to comment and promulgate rules and such.

Seems to me that there's something terribly wrong with the state of the American corporate media- and also that there are responsible regulations that might be re-applied that would ameliorate some of it.

The Israeli president, Shimon Peres, issued a similar videotaped outreach on Friday, appealing to “the noble Iranian people on behalf of the ancient Jewish people.”
