I'm done w/ him. How DARE HE!!!

A Garden At The White House

On Friday, Michelle Obama will begin digging up a patch of White House lawn to plant a vegetable garden, the first since Eleanor Roosevelt’s victory garden in World War II. There will be no beets (the president doesn’t like them) but arugula will make the cut.

Summer will bring corn and squash and tomatoes and peppers and such. Maybe even okra. I'm hoping for okra, a much maligned but very yummy vegetable when prepared properly.

98. I didn't mean they should throw out of season seeds in the ground now.
I, too, like okra. I prepared some once that was good - sliced it thin, and battered it and fried it. It was so yummy. I got the recipe out of a cookbook where the author had some incredibly complicated recipe for the batter, with about 90 hard to find ingredients. Then she said, "I got this recipe from a lady name Old Aunt Pippie (or something like that) but she just used Bisquick and pepper". I figured what was good enough for Old Aunt Pippie was good enough for me!

nasty canned or pickled things that my mother gave me growing up.
A friend who is an expert chef roasted some and used them in a salad with goat cheese and walnuts and some vinaigrette. Yum.
That said, I don't love them so much that I would include them in a garden.
So, I will fight the beetrage!

And the Cylindra beets are the best. They aren't round, but cylindrical. Makes for more uniform-sized pieces.

But disliking cats is the criteria that I really use. He hasn't declared that yet I hope.

I talked about you today because my boss at the co-op had this picture of an arm in the air holding a huge beet with greens and the blue sky as backdrop. I told her we had this poster on my board whose name is Beetwasher:)

Let's lobby for beets..they're so healthy for the iron content and for strengthening the kidneys. Maybe Obama just doesn't know how to eat them..my fave way is to shred them raw(after you've washed them, of course) in a big ol salad with avocado, Boston lettuce, shredded carrots, sunflower sprouts, big juicy organic tomatoes and the yummiest salad dressing of choice.:9

All I found on Google was "beet sugar lobbyists" but you know there has got to be beet lobbyists somewhere in the country...or at least there will be some repukes paying someone to SAY that they are beet lobbyist/industry, since the repukes can't miss a single opportunity to be have "outrage" towards the WH.

137. that's bullshit, because the beets could be given away to hungry people
I always plant things I'm not particularly fond of, like turnips, because they are welcomed at the food bank, not to mention that my elderly neighbor, with diabetes and cancer, mentioned that the doctor recommended them to him--thus I assume others with his health problems would also.

Even in the tiny 8x10 garden with which I started when I first moved to my present house in 2007, I ended up with a LOT of stuff to give away. I saw pictures of Michelle with a bunch of children breaking ground for a very large garden. Now we hear that the only things being planted are things the president likes? that garden is going to produce a lot more food than only the Obamas need.

I think the personal agenda against beets should have been dropped, just as it was asinine of GHWB to diss broccoli.
