US First Lady Michelle Obama during a visit to the Elizabeth Garrett Anderson Language School in London

First Lady Sparks Frenzy At London All-Girls School

April 02, 2009 11:57 AM

ABC News' Yunji de Nies and Karen Travers report:

Who caused all the shrieking at the Elizabeth Garrett Anderson Language School in London today?

A surprise visit from English soccer star David Beckham? Pop boy band, the Jonas Brothers?

No, that was First Lady Michelle Obama sparking a frenzy at the all-girls school, where she spoke about the importance of education, explained why being smart is cool and even shared a little girl talk about her courtship with her husband, President Obama.

14. Ill post it here :)
It was a small venue and there were only like 40 people there it was early in the primaries and Obama fever hadnt caught on yet. We got to talk with her a bit and listened closely as she talked to others that were there and if i wasnt on board with Obama before that day Michelles loveliness to my wife and child and genuine caring for those people in that room sold me that day.

16. What a wonderful message she delivered to those young women:
"I am an example of what's possible when girls are loved and nurtured by the women around them,” she said.

Mrs. Obama emphasized the power of an education and said she was standing there today because of her education.

“By getting a good education you too can create your own destiny. I never cut class. I like being smart. I thought being smart was the coolest thing in the world,” she said. “You are the women that will build the world as it should be and that's why a good education is so important.”

22. No, they probably don't. But they have an incredibly difficult job. They have a First Lady
who is incredibly popular and loves to interact with people, but on the other hand they have a certain percentage of racist idiots who would love nothing more than to harm her. I don't think any First Family has been simultaneously as loved and as threatened as the Obamas. I don't envy the work her SS detail has cut out for them, and I guess I'd rather they be jumpy than not react fast enough.

and performing. How many kids think that growing up, being smart, being responsible mean that you are immediately boring or that you have no fun and that you can't express yourself?

It took me a minute or two to decide if I liked it. And then I noticed the lines of the outfit and how perfect they are for Michelle. And I noticed the quirkiness of it and now perfect that is for her and for those girls who performed. It shows that you can be creative and show your personality even as you grow up.
