Obama's Blackwater? Mercenary Firm Gets Millions for Private Security in Israel & Iraq

Federal records reveal a multi-million dollar contract for a private U.S. paramilitary force operating out of Jerusalem.
By Jeremy Scahill

On the campaign trail, Barack Obama's advisers said he "can't rule out won't rule out" using mercenary forces, like Blackwater. Now, it appears that the Obama administration has decided on its hired guns of choice: Triple Canopy, a Chicago company now based in Virginia.

It may not have Blackwater's thuggish reputation, but Triple Canopy has its own bloody history in Iraq and a record of hiring mercenaries from countries with atrocious human rights records. What's more, Obama is not just using the company in Iraq, but also as a U.S.-government funded private security force in Israel/Palestine, operating out of Jerusalem.

Thoughts on this?

I really don't want to see an Obama version of Blackwater operating out of different areas. We're gonna run into the same problems as before. They're not accountable to the UCMJ or the punishments a government employee would be ... so why mess with fire?

I don't like this.

2. Nah
I think, since Obama is doing it then maybe making a bunch of fuckin' noise about it might actually make a difference, unlike the tools in the last administration.

3. Ugh.
I sincerely hope Triple Canopy is a stop-gap measure until other alternatives become viable.

For the most part, Obama been handed a steaming pile, and should be applauded for how he's dealt with it thus far - Geithner notwithstanding.

Compromise is perpetual by most successful American politicians, and I can tolerate a certain amount. That said, I've had a hope that justice would be done, or at least corrected going forward with this Administration.

Wringing the bullshit out of the corrupt contracting that is Iraq was among my hopes, if not for outright justice of past wrongdoing, then at least going forward.
