Bachmann Warns Of "Re-Education Camps" For Young People
Bachmann Warns Of "Re-Education Camps" For Young People
By Eric Kleefeld - April 6, 2009, 2:15PM

In an interview on Saturday with local right-wing talk radio host Sue Jeffers, Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-MN) warned that the Democrats could soon be requiring America's youth to attend "re-education camps," where they will imbibe the philosophy of the government.

The target of Bachmann's ire is a recently-passed national service bill, expanding Americorps. Although Bachmann said that the language in the present legislation makes service voluntary, she warned that a "Democrat colleague" was proposing to make it mandatory. The discussion happens at the 5:30 mark here:

I believe when it's all said and done, this service that -- I believe that there's a very strong chance that we will see that young people will be put into mandatory service. And the real concern is that there are provisions for what I would call re-education camps for young people, where young people have to go and get trained in a philosophy that the government puts forward and then they have to go and work in some of these politically correct forums. It's very concerning. It appears that there's a philosophical agenda behind all of this, and especially if young people are mandated to go into this. As a parent, I would have a very, very difficult time seeing my children do this. Again, a huge power-grab, at a cost of billions of dollars.

Another fun part: Jeffers quite vocally encouraged Bachmann to run for the Senate in 2012 against Democratic incumbent Amy Klobuchar, though Bachmann didn't respond one way or the other during the course of the interview.

20. She needs grammatical treatment. Neither Democrat nor concerning is an adjective
Some of these people go to great lengths to make themselves sound ignorant and some of them just are.

2. How crazy do you have to get before being removed from Congress?
Is there a standard? Does it require two doctor's signatures?

The woman is clearly a danger to herself.

4. I would love to see this nutjob
run for the Senate against the Dem incumbant, she would get her holier than thou ass handed to her so badly it would be hilarious. This woman is totally unhinged and we need to make her and those like her the face of the modern Republican party just as much as we can. I think, and really hope, that the modern fundy movement is dying because of these crazy snake handling assholes.

6. Any DUers know the reasons or rules for censuring a member of the House.
Bachmann's rhetoric is getting out of control.

The bill that passed basically increased funding for volunteer organizations like AmeriCorps. Basically, it is increasing opportunities for volunteerism, not mandating it.

Although, I disagree, the GOP has been oppossed to this type of government spending and has criticized it in the past. I don't really have a HUGE problem with that, as they have every right to voice their dissent.

But what Bachmann is doing is going way beyond that. She is formulating her criticism based on the paranoid ramblings of the far RW that's been spewing this and other incendiary and false ideas since Election Day.

I think it's time for Pelosi and the Democratic House members to start looking into whether a censure can be brought against Bachmann.

Anyone know the criteria and/or process?

You're damned right I'm armed and ready!

The service shouldn't be mandatory, though--forced volunteerism is called slavery.

9. This woman needs to stop listening to Michael "Weiner" Savage.
He was blow-harding away on the same re-education camp nonsense a couple of weeks ago, and that young people would have to wear Hitler Youth uniforms, AND that it would extend down to 8-year olds being forced into these camps. This man gets PAID to spew his paranoic delusions over the PUBLIC airwaves.

19. *Irony Alert*
http://dumpbachmann.blogspot.com/2009/03/know-truth-minnesota-teen-challenge.html

Michelle Bachmann is listed as an endorser of the extremely fundy teen "camp" Minnesota Teen Challenge.

In fact, she supports earmarks for it:

http://minnesotaindependent.com/20334/know-the-truth-cannot-evade-scrutiny

Guess "indoctrination" is OK as long as it's the fundy kind.

Seriously, get a grip Bachmann.

23. Horrible.
I was just about to point that out. We already have "re-education camps" for youth in this country. I mean the boot camps where kids judged "troublemakers" or "at-risk" go to be abused, beaten, raped, and forced to run in hot weather without water until they die. Where GLBT teens get sent to be vilified until their hearts and spirits are broken. Where fundie homeschooled kids are sent to whip up "God warrior" frenzy and teach them sanctified hate for everyone who isn't exactly like them.

25. It's called PROJECTION
They just think about all the things that they want to do to us and in their minds, we will do the same thing to them given the chance.

The question is, does she really believe this crazy crap or is she trying to grow her fan base?

28. I'm not sure I want to know.
She seems genuinely unhinged to me. But she seems together enough to know what keeps the dough rolling in for re-election. I'm sure she's trying to refill her war chest after Tinklenberg went after her seat and raised so much money. He lost, but that had to be a warning sign to her that people are starting to pay closer scrutiny to her.
