BAGHDAD – Cheered wildly by U.S. troops, President Barack Obama flew unannounced into Iraq on Tuesday and promptly declared it is time for Iraqis "take responsibility for their country" after America's commitment of six years and thousands of lives.

"You have given Iraq the opportunity to stand on its own as a democratic country," the president said as he made a brief inspection of a war he opposed as candidate and now vows to end as commander in chief. "That is an extraordinary achievement."

"It is time for us to transition to the Iraqis," he said as an estimated 600 troops cheered. "They need to take responsibility for their country."

It's like a case study in delusion and denial. From the comments on these threads, you would get the idea that bush was overwhelmingly popular and Obama is widely despised, the exact opposite of the truth.

The Freepers have this idea that the American people will soon "wake up" and realize their error in electing a tyrannical Communist dictator. They keep seeing signs of his decline and fall in the polls, where the rest of us see steady or gradually increasing approval numbers. They see soldiers despising Obama, where the rest of us see happy people relieved to have a qualified CIC. They saw a competent, manly bush, where the rest of us saw a clumsy, inarticulate doofus.

Really - I spend some time on boards that are extremely unhappy with Obama (I am there for gardening, livestock, other issues etc and do not click on their political or religious threads). After reading this account, I thought, boy I don't remember seeing this elsewhere, and god knows they are always bitching or saying something unflattering about Obama, how come they are leaving this alone?

I read the yahoo account of it, and realized that they do NOT want to highlight this positive reception that our CIC received. They want to stick with the theory that the military is against this foreign born (as they call it) CIC who has no authority over them. This reception by the troops totally gives lie to their position and so they just are leaving it out, ie the threads are being quietly left to die on their own, rather than risk someone spilling the beans. They were clearly waiting for "booing" that never came, and are shocked about all the happiness expressed on this visit.

After bitching about democrats and Obama supporters being "obamabots", worshippers of him, making fun esp. of "I love you...I love you back", it must freak them to no end to see their own military saying the same stuff, showing the same kind of respect and playfulness with our CIC.

And I noticed it too was another short thread - when some military dude complains that they can't support Obama because of the tinfoil theory that he is a foreigner, there are hundreds of responses egging it on. These threads just dried up and died early - I think the reaction he got was deeply disturbing to these people.

While waiting for a FR link, I tweaked some people on one of these aborted "Obama does surprise visit" threads that appeared on a gardening/canning board I visit. I posted the "troops wildly cheer Obama" article from yahoonews, bolded all relevant happy descriptions (including I love you, love you back stuff) and asked why the troops seem to be loving Obama, when all I ever see here is how they hate the "imposter" and how supposedly that I love you/love you back stuff only was supposed to happen during democratic rallies by crazed obamabots who worship their messiah? Tweak, tweak, tweak....

Two responses - one said I should watch the video on Fox or youtube, because despite the cheering, "look at their eyes"; the other made a snide comment highlighting the yahoo news article author's name, I am guess she thinks the author is jewish, ?? I don't bothering answering - I don't even usually post outside of gardening issues, but it ticked me off that they didn't include the favorable reaction.

I'm on dialup, so youtube isn't part of my life, so I turned on Fox while I made breakfast and managed to catch them showing a few clips - they in fact did cheer him loudly as he arrived, they did interrupt his speech several times with happy "hoo-yah" kind of cheers, and the last clip they showed had him wading into the crowd (black, white, brown faces, men, women, asians, you name it), lots holding up cameras with flashes going off (did look like a rock star moment in a military sort of way), him hugging people, hands outreached to be shaken, him speaking with them. Kind of like what you'd see at a democratic rally during the campaign. In some clips, mostly black faces behind him; other clips, whiter faces; same with some of the crowd shots, but surprisingly, they did show him with people of all stripes in one way or another.

Turned it off after verifying that, so didn't hear the Fox commentary (can only do in small doses, on an as-needed basis:) They acted like they do when they respect a CIC - serious while he is speaking, as appropriate, but letting loose to let him know they approve. You'd have thought "so much for the theory that all the military hates our CIC"... it was good to see such a positive reaction, given all that is going on.
